Does upgrades cost you more money for nothing?
« on: November 05, 2013, 12:00:45 PM »
I know some you out there upgrade at the drop of a dime, and that's your right, but over the years I've found for myself upgrades are a waste of money.  I use some of the same software I've had for years and can still do the same things as what the new stuff provides, yes it might take a little longer or a work around, but it still works.  I see companies also have gotten smarter, you buy a new machine now and you just about have to buy everything all over again printers, software etc. Are they really a lot of benefit to be had in moving up? some you will say heck yes some might not whats you take.  Now I'm I against the new tech coming out, no, but coming out every few months yes, you don't have time to fully work with it before they have the next best thing, so whats you take.

I wish they'd leave ma and my Windows XP alone. Upgrades piss me off. Having a few good functions added is great, having to re-learn how to use a program sucks.

They are about to completely leave your XP alone... they have dropped ALL support and are even talking about dropping updates for the MS Security Essentials if you are running XP.

I upgrade computers all the time, but I make them myself so it is a lot cheaper. I do admit if there is something I can get for a "deal" or a upgrade on technology I am a sucker for that!
I can say for us, buying our new press with it's registration system WAS worth it. The speed of set up alone is ridiculous(in a good way).

Some things are just much faster or more convenient with a upgrade. If you don't have a bottleneck at a point, or if it ain't broke, then don't fix it- or upgrade it for that matter. Suppose there may be some exceptions though. I can remember the first place I worked in high school, I convinced the owner to upgrade from the accordion camera we had and carbon copy order forms to a computer and scanner. We didn't have a bottleneck anywhere there and aside from the safelight in the dark room, there was nothing broken. But the computer was a HUGE step forward!

Are you thinking on upgrading to a color monitor Darryl?  :P

pretty much what Alex said. Upgrade if it's worth it or you have to. . .

pierre

p.s. OK some of us upgrade 'cause we want to. As long as it is understood that it is a luxury and is funded and treated as such, all is good . . .
Yes, we've won our share of awards, and yes, I've tested stuff and read the scientific papers, but ultimately take everything I say with more than just a grain of salt! So if you are looking for trouble, just do as I say or even better, do something I said years ago!

This ties into my two threads today about PS7 on a new machine. It's freakn' ancient but along with Image Ready, still does all I want and need.

@ TCT, ok mister funny, but I would like to upgrade to all flat screens monitors around here, for they take up less room and are brighter.  I don't like to upgrade unless I really have to and I'm mainly speaking about computers and software here.  I think some tech just moves to fast and you really don't see a benefit no more than just to keep up with the Jones.

I was just messing around Darryl!
A thought for flat screen monitors though- wait another 3 weeks. Places around here like to put those on sale for black friday or christmas time sales...

That's all fine. It's when I start getting newer versions of .ai .cdr .eps files and have to upgrade those programs that will soon be a problem as newer versions of Ai and Corel will likely not work on XP for much longer.

Darryl? You really don't have flat screens? C'mon man you're joking right? If you aren't I think bigger is better in monitors. I have a 23" and sometimes wish I had bigger.

You're doing it wrong--you're supposed to cushion your costs upgrading by passing them along to the customer.

"Brand new, V2 short sleeve shirts, for only 38% more money!"

Assure them that these NEW shirts are superior in every way to the old pieces of junk you were forced to sell them last month.
Explain how much better these will work for them, and how the small 'undocumented features' will be fixed very very soon.
Apologize for making them use those outdated shirts last order, even though the new ones weren't out yet then, for extra credit.

ScreenFoo, do you deal with the same copy machine guy that I do with some of my consulting clients?

A month after they put in one of these monsters that cost 10's of thousands... they have a problem and I call the guy and he says "What model do you have?"  "Oh, that's the OLD model... the new models don't have that issue.. they do that function differently..."

"WTF?!  You just sold this company this machine last month!!!"  >:(

To get down to where it's really screwed you'd have to talk to the engineers--but they may not have good news either.

"The new way sucks too, but at least it doesn't break right away like the ones we were making last year."  ;)
