Looking to get into a new Discharge pms mixing system.
« on: September 26, 2013, 03:19:22 PM »
So we are totally done screwing around with Matsui's half ass'd discharge color matching. We can usually hit the colors, but the time it takes to perfect a color is totally ridiculous since their matching software isn't even for discharging only for on white shirt wb printing only. I have heard people speak of sericol's colors in ready mix colors like a waterbased version of the wilflex mx system, or possibly Rutland, and the CCI new pigment series. Someone even mentioned Magna to me, but I contacted my Nazdar rep today and she said the Magna mixing system isn't meant for discharging either. Bottom line, I want a pms matching system that is for discharging. We will continue using CCI Discharge white, and more than likely stick with their base, but I wanted to see if anyone here is using any of these other systems daily or weekly to give a testimony on their performance, accuracy ect. Thanks in advance!!

Sericol has PMS formulas but is finished ink ie more expensive. It is awesome however

we have 6-7 gallons of Sericol and used the PMS formulas which all of them were off by a decent amount so we had to eye it.

Their ink is great but the mixing 'system' didn't work out that well.  There was a gold we were mixing and it was way off but not in that formula there was a yellow/gold already and we took that and added 1% of a red to it and had our color perfect that way.  I hated screwing around hitting the colors we needed....

CCI seems decent but I haven't heard from someone with it.

We use CCI's DC mixing system almost daily. We really like it but their mixing white always ends up leaving chunks/streaks and we have recently stopped using it. If we have the liberty, we will find a close color that does not require mixing white. We have also used a D-White/D-Base mixture in place of mixing white with good success. PMS colors are mixed using the recipes right out of the Pantone book. They are extremely close and require little altering in most cases. CCI sells a trial kit for cheap.

Not sure who your Nazdar contact is, but that is wrong information.  The Magna system uses pigments and bases for color matching PMS -- discharge included.  The MagnaMix software has formulas for discharge, high solids, and soft base.

PM me or contact me in my sig directly if you would like any more info.

Heres a news flash, they ALL work!  Just depends on which one you get used to.  We use a hybrid in our shop, because I like a little from each one.  Magna is good, love their software, SUPER concentrated pigs, there is a kit for cheap.   Magna Super white smokes!  CCI software is probably my favourite because it will automatically do a 5% boost, which is needed.  Pigs are cheaper, but you use much more as compared to Magna.  CCI FLOs, hands down the best on the market.  There is a CCI kit for cheap aswell.  Sericol makes a great product but their mixing formulas are off IMO.  If you can use their colors straight from the bucket they work great.  CCI base works great no matter which pigs you use.  Its flows the best in the screen, not to runny, and its cheaper than the rest.  And it doesn't stink as bad as the others either.

We are relatively happy with the Matsui system, but it does require testing and tweaking.  We have a lot of our own recipes now and we are fairly invested in it as we have purchased large amounts of most of the pigments and the bases.

I have yet to hear a compelling and convincing argument to switch systems, especially with threads like this: http://www.theshirtboard.com/index.php?topic=6907.0

It seems opinions are always changing when it comes to discharge systems, which seems to imply to me that none of them mixed to spec will match pantones with regularity without some testing and custom mix recipes.  If someone differs and had had experience with all the systems and feels strongly about the accuracy and ease of use of one over the others I would love to hear about it.  I want to use the best option out there, and honestly price isn't an issue if efficiency and repeatability are there...

edit:  http://www.theshirtboard.com/index.php/topic,8006.15.html has some good info too it seems, but again, nothing compelling enough to abandon our current investment.  If there is something all around better though I would rather move to it now than later.

We use the CCI system and the colors turn out great 90some% of the time.  Agreed that the mixing white should be thrown out and just use the D-White. We like you, switched over from Matsui and it is night and difference.
Check out CCI's website,  the top banners have some crazy deals. Like a one time buy one get one free deal. We used that when we re-upped on like 10gal of base 10gal of white and 1gal of like 6 pigments and they still honored it.  I don't remember exactly,  but I want to say we got like $800 or so for free!

Ordered the cci pigments last night. I'll know after a few days how it goes, but I would like to try the Mag and sericol colors too. I needed to get something for next weeks orders not much time for testing being busy. Also want to keep in mind having local availability.

we used the Magna system - the standard ZFS not the new-fangled hard to ship type of activator.

colors came out ok - the software wants you to add 6% ZFS to everything (at least the formulas we used) - we adjusted to our liking.

CCI base and Rutland pigs. We'll be giving the CCI pigs a shot though.
