I understand that the first sort of silk screen printing (stencils on silk) was done in China more than a thousand years ago, but the Japanese are the ones who started getting a little tension on the silk, and are credited with starting the process more like it is done today.

It is credited as the world's oldest printing method.

At one time, you would have been correct, at least for our segment of the industry.

Of course, at that time, shirts were a relatively small subset of the (then named) Screen Process printing industry, but credit the Freseners with an excellent reference guide.

No, and he didn't invent Campbell's soup or Marilyn Monroe either ;D. In art terms, it's called serigraphy, and there are amazing prints out there... Not to mention counter cards, gas station signs, signage of all sorts really, and industrial uses that you wouldn't see, like laying down adhesive before pieces are assembled. Check it out, it's pretty cool.

You wanna see the craziest stuff as far as tolerance goes, look into the electronics industry.

The Wiki page is pretty good, although they neglect to mention how stencils were first made before silk was used--identical rice paper stencils were glued around human hairs stretched across a frame.

I would have thought they'd talk about the stencils popular in the middle ages as well... just because they couldn't suspend a center doesn't mean they were totally irrelevant.   ;D

Seems like it could be a pretty tough call whether or not stencil printing or relief printing came first...  I'd vote relief, but only because of the hand prints in caves.   ;)
