Health Question..
« on: February 13, 2013, 09:53:43 AM »
I have a question to throw out there for my father in law..

He is in texas and a retired teacher and coach..well for his retirement he started printing shirts, he's been doing it for 15 years, he's 70 now..manually printing...

a couple months ago he was having chest pains...went to hospital...thought he may have had a heartattack...well it wasn't..his cardiologist said he has the heart of a 55 year old...My father in law goes to gym everyday...

thought is was gall bladder...nope...all his doctors gave him a clean bill of health...

He can't sleep..in the middle of the night he has to stand up for 3-4 hours because the pain..

sp he took muscle relaxers and now able to sleep..

He is thinking that printing manually (he prints 30-40 hours per week at age 70) is messing up the muscles in his back causing the pain...

Does anyone know if this has happened to them or happened to someone they knew?

Thanks

Sounds to me like he needs to do some core strength exercises. Manually printing 30+ hours a week will jack up a 20 year old if the body isn't ready for it. You are placing a ton of static and dynamic load on the upper body.

I would suggest yoga or at least some nautilus machines that focus on trunk and arm strength.

Also, high tension screens, correct off contact, properly thinned ink and a sharp squeegee of the correct durometer go a very long way in reducing printer fatigue. (and you can print faster!)
There is scarcely anything in the world that some man cannot make a little worse, and sell a little more cheaply. The person who buys on price alone is this man's lawful prey.

I'll second that. I printed abt 600 pcs, DC white, last night.  Got done at 1am. You know what I did when I got home? Pushups and crunches.

This will destroy yer back though. I didn't know what back pain felt like until year two of my screen printing career. It's just too repetitive. My hands are the main issue these days now that I'm pull stroking all this wb.

not related to screnprinting, but I had a similar problem. After sleeping for 5-6 hours I'd wake from the chest pain. Tried all kinds of stuff and nothing helped. It was directly related to the time I spent laying down. Even spending the day laying on the couch watching TV would cause similar problems. Had doctors check me out could not figure it out. My best guess is, something similar to arthritis.  After about three years of this issue coming up on and off, for unrelated reasons I eliminated the animal products from my diet and the chest pains went away. I am back to eating cheese and chocolate 2-3  times per week and meat once a month without the chest pains coming back. Not sure if it is related at all, but it did stop when I switched so in my eyes it most likely is. As a further reference, I did not eat much fast food even before (once a month maybe) so my diet was pretty good, but it was heavy on meat with not a lot of fruits and veggies.

If your FIL decides to try this, let me know I can give you some tips to pass along to make the transition easier.

100% with Pierre--I've been cutting down on 'inflammatory' foods and it's amazing how many things it will help with.
Been eating less meat for the last six or seven years, and found honey products and fish oil supplements helped quite a bit with hand/arm pain from printing, and I don't get sore as easily.

i forget the name but i watched a documentary on Netflix about diet and animal products - in countries that don't eat meat (at least as much as Americans) the instances of cancer, diabetes and heart disease went down dramatically.

one study was i think Norway - heart disease was climbing before the Nazi occupation.  the Nazis took the livestock for themselves and the locals had to eat a plant based diet.  the heart disease went down dramatically.  after the war when they changed their diet back and the heart disease went back up.

i realize that you stated that your father in law saw a cardiologist, but it wouldn't hurt to try a plant based diet.

other things to try would be a chiropractor - could be that the vertebrae are out of alignment.

The thing that cured my back pain was buying the auto....... ;D Seriously though I am tall and it sucked ass printing that many hours manually. I had to hit the gym everyday in order for my muscles to not tighten up at night. Strong core is the key if you are going to print that many hours no matter what age you are.

I got a chest pain and thought I might be having a heartattack, nope mine comes from pulling a manual squeegee and from lifting weights with my son...a very bad pulled chest muscle and back muscle...just tell him to take it easy a little.

it's called "Forks over Knives" implying that if you eat better you are less likely to go under a knife. While toe movie is more of a propaganda film with very little opposing view, it did make me evaluate what I eat and I reduced the animal product intake as a consequence.

YES!  thats the one.  it is more like a propaganda film.  the benefits are that my girlfriends mother spends less time at our house because there isnt any meat.  she cant go one meal without some type of meat.

That would make my mother in law hang out at the house more.

When she lists out ingredients for a meal, she always mentions which ones are organic, and with her, everything is organic.  It takes twice as long to spit it out.  Organic kale, organic extra virgin olive oil...even down to the spices.

I should cut out some meat, I eat mostly lean meats though.  Chicken and fish are our 2 biggest proteins.

A couple of years ago I had this intermittent problem with my throat. Not burning inside, not severe pain, but discomfort just behind my adam's apple. Anyway, my doctor told me he didn't have the equipment to do a thorough exam and sent me to an ear/nose/throat specialist. She looked in my throat, then said she wanted to do an exam with a fiber optic camera, snaked up thru my snot locker, so she could see what was up. She squirted a "numbing spray" that did pretty much nothing except burn from the alcohol, then ran the hose up my snout and down into my esophagus. Made me lean forward toward her (while I tried not to look down her shirt, or get caught doing it, a la George Costanza -- she was pretty nice looking) and make these sounds while she watched the monitor. Pulled it out and said if it came back she'd give me a prescription for acid reflux disease. Now, I had no sensation of burning like you get when you urp up some bile, and I was surprised at her diagnosis. My doctor told my wife that he was afraid I might have throat cancer which is why he sent me to her. Hasn't come back, and I asked the woman if diet would cause it. Yup. I was too embarassed to tell her it was probably some hot dogs I'd been eating. Lips and a$$holes. Beaks and waddles. Or as my grandfather used to say, misery wrapped in a skin. Whatever they can't put under cellophane and sell.
