Hello from Washinton State
« on: January 30, 2013, 11:48:02 PM »
Hi there. I finally registered. My name is Karie I have owned Sunflower Graphics since 1997 and the business has been around since 1985. When I bought the shop they were still hand stretching and stapling wooden screens. No computer ( all art was made using clip art from a book and a copy machine)  So I learned everything all at once. The great thing is I learned the theory how everything worked. Oh and did i mention our screen room was only400sf?  We have grown a bit since then we now are in a 10,000sf building and do contract and custom work. Screen print, embroidery, signage, sublimation and some ad specialties. We are hoping to add a DTG in the next year. We specialize in working with small screen shops and embroidery shops that need larger jobs than they can handle done. We have no minimums either. I am the head artist specializing in Corel Draw. I love my job and am always happy to help people with art etc. Always looking to learn new things though.
now that I've rambled on......thank you.....and good day

Always good to see someone with a little history.
Threads often drift back to ...I remember when we had to...

I, for one am looking forward to your input.
That rug really tied the room together, did it not?

Hi Sunflower.

It's great to have you aboard. You've got history. We love new members and newbs to the industry but it's exciting to have seasoned members "want" to come here. We do seem to have the majority of people here being very seasoned at printing and we appreciate that. We love the exchange of great experiences from different sides.

Thanks for popping in to say hello.

Thanks

Hey Karie,
Great to meet you. Good job on joining TSB! An amazing source of knowledge here by some really incredible people. It really is. Next time you plan on being in Seattle let me know and swing on by for some lunch or coffee or just to chat. My business partner, production manager, and I plan on being back in Portland in March for business matters for a couple of days so maybe on the way down we could stop in and say hey if that's ok. We are always looking for local/state shops to handle some of our overflow if you are interested. Anyway, great to meet you and this is the place to be!

Brandon, we always are happy to have fellow screeners drop by.....We are on the dry side of the state though lol So when ever you want to get rid of that webbing and dry out a bit we are in one of the most beautiful recreational areas of Washington state...that is as long as you like the water. Took a gander at your website...great work. may have to pick your brain sometime. Always looking to add some more contract work ;)

Hello!
I bought a shop stuck in a time warp. They had only a couple years earlier stopped stapling their own screens (even though half the ones they were using were those staple jobbies). The artist had the only computer in the shop, running Corel 4, printing on transparency paper with a Lasermark 4. He started with rubylith and an projection camera. Oh I took over a shop in this shape in 2010.

I'm one of the newbs happy for the experience that keeps flowing in, welcome.

Welcome Sunflower, I would say you cut your teeth the hard way, but those skills are always handy if all the tech stops working.

Knowing the manual ways of doing things makes you much more thankful for the automation side of it.  Work smarter, not harder.

sounds like you have a very nice setup there...and welcome to the boards.
