LOL.  Bahaaha.  Love it.

On a more serious note,  I could add the hand extension in the same style to match the art if you need it done, then separate it to look just like it is. Or, is she expecting you to "re-do it" in vector?  Then again, you got the original with the full hand intact right?

We call that "Nephew Art". I'll admit though, that at least we usually DO get the whole thing!...

I guess you could always just print one color, and give her some ink and let her "fill in what's missing". Or hows about just just a box of cotton thread and a squeegee?

Hehe...

Send her a proof with a bone sticking out of that hand.
My old man had a small offset shop and he'd always get customers who knew someone who was "sort of an artist". I guess what you're showing us is "sort of art" . . .

seems like normal everyday custom order art. seems easy enough to work with. get your artist to finish it up, proof it and get the job done. whats the problem? this is custom screen printing?

We call it "Little Johnny won the shirt design contest" art. Quick story we had little Johnnies art on the VI for a reading club or something. He used about 30 gazillion magic markers (including flourescents) so we had no choice but to reproduce as CMYK. The indignant school teacher (It's the VI so the school teachers probably have a 9th grade education) got extremely huffy when we, over the course of an hour, tried to explain the process of replicating the art. Later she came back with last years shirt which they loved........a 3 color clip art apple.
She claimed in a letter to the Superintendant that we were belittling and talking down to her, which is a sensitive issue down there. We had no choice but to have her submit new art and re-buy/re-print the shirts.
Good times

This really sharpens one's customer relations skills. Explaining processes can be tricky. Indexing is a great way to go about this kind of art, but would probably be of no use for the scenario Tony lays out...

Yes he was using transparent markers and of course they wanted multiple shirt colors and of course they had a budget.

I gave up trying to help a custy understand good vs bad art as they have no clue, and they don't need to. We are the artist's and its our job to make what they give us, work for our printing needs.

I just tell them to send me what they have and ill make it work for you.

I add on a $40 art re-creattion fee and if I don't feel like doing the work or if its a little out of my scope, I send the offending file out for a vector re-creation from the dozen or so "art service" companies that I use. Cost me 5 to 30 bucks and in a few hours, or next morning the vector file is in my inbox, I do some color work and out to film.

Here's a "Little Johnny Won" but done by Lauren, and with only a little clean up, looks great for this particular group of elementary school runners.
I do two or three of these for this group each year.

On this kind of art, the talent on our part is knowing just how much to touch up to not lose its flavor, but still make everything readable.
On this one, besides a little eraser work, I changed the balloon and text in "running"

That rug really tied the room together, did it not?

Personally, I love projects like that.  They're a challenge sometimes, but I don't mind that...

Reminds me of an old story about a screen printer looking at the Mona Lisa--"It's a nice painting and all, but it just doesn't pop."    ;D

I was just about to say- Putting aside that the pencil lines need to be cleaned up, the main interest should be how to faithfully recreate this? Crayon effect and all. There's a bazillion of these type of "master pieces" proudly displayed on refrigerators, bedroom walls and chalk boards. The Sprout channel also feature these as part of their programming everyday! I guess we as people are already conditioned to appreciate these as acceptable. So our job-(I mean goal) as printers is to faithfully recreate what is requested, not interpret how it looks. So are we talking mesh count, eom, ink type and process?

Vectoring it will just give the organization a different feel (commercial vs grassroots) and that may not be what they want.
