To Discharge or Not to Discharge

So, we, like some of you here, are going to be dabbling in the discharge arena shortly, and I have a customer who wants a one color white on turquoise shirts.  Gildan's chart lists this (sapphire in gildan) as a "c" - not recommended.  Anyone had any success using the cci white on the 100% turquoise, as we're planning on going the cci base and white route?  Should we be sticking strictly to the gildan chart with what it recommends and doesn't recommend discharging or is it merely a rough guideline?  If it's a rough guideline, what are the work arounds, if any, to be able to satisfactorily discharge a color shirt that Gildan doesn't recommend discharging?

Use the base/white CCI for a UB then thin plastisol on top. DC white on Sapphier  will not work. The chart is fairly accurate

I presume by "base/white" you mean mixing the two?  If so, the biggest concern I've heard people express about plastisol on top of the white discharge is cracking issues on the plastisol.    ..

P.S. - if you did mean mixing the two, what is the typical ratio you would use?

I do not recommend straight white DC for a base that is primarily what causes cracking. You can use whatever ratio you like. My girl eyeballs a 70 base/30 white for most substrates.

Is it not possible to print a discharge base and then top it off with an opaque white waterbased ink such as Sericol's Texiscreen Aqua AJ? I assume you will still end up getting a softer hand that way especially when printing the white through a high mesh count. Or am I way off here with this suggestion?

Not at all. Some of those opaque whites can be chalky though. I prefer a thinned down high mesh palstisol. Be sure to wash test!

I agree with Tony a straight DC base will crack I know, I think I ask Tony about that and he told me why, I would hang on just about every word he tells ya about discharge.

Just got our Base, White, and activator.  Tried White/activator just straight to a shirt.  Cracks, has heavier hand than plastisol, and looks meh.  Clearly I had higher expectations or did something wrong. 

Next time we will try base + white I guess.

Brandt its going to be a little stiff at first, but it should not have a heavy hand like plastisol, and yes it will crack its in the shirt instead of laying on top but you know that.

It doesn't look anything like other examples of it that I have....  So I know something isn't right or a different method was used.  Probably adding in more base. 

I wouldn't give away what came off the press.

Never tried the CCI discharge but I would at least use a 166 mesh if not even  higher. That should leave you with a nice soft finish. I just did 50 navy tees today with Magna Colors extreme white discharge. Used a 166 cause all my other higher mesh counts were in use for other jobs, well the white came out extremely white and soft.

I never print straight right for the reasons listed above. I gave CCI my formula for base/white and now they use it to make Brite Base. Just make it yourself I say.
