Your stuff looks great.....But based on the number of artists that seem to contact me these days I must say that I think "staff artists" are a dying breed....Many are looking for jobs on the payroll but when no offers come to them many seem to go the freelance route....Good luck....

I don't know about that. For smaller shops, yes, they are a dying breed. For medium sized shops, they are a must, but they might have other tasks to do as well. Our artist also does our embroidery.

We have four and they share creative, seps, film output, and digitizing duties as well as catalog layout, flyers, etc. You'd be surprised how many shops have 2 or more.

Just hired my first and it was another of those head slapping "should have done this years ago"
moments.
Mockups, seps and film currently. Didn't realize how much time I was spending on that stuff...

Many of the larger shops have over the last 5 years, downsized by cutting at least one of 4-5 artist. When backed up, they do job out the overload to freelancers. The freelance business was booming 3 years ago. It's slowed down now. That could be a number of reasons.
People are hiring more artist full time again tho, I can see it on my end. Some artist choose to be freelancers rather than to go back working for someone else as it's waaaay better than working for someone. Even if the pay is not as good or the lack of benefits, the other benefits far outweigh money. Sure, I have to eat in the soup line with the vagrants now and then but I'm free.

I guess it depends on what kind of soup they are serving. If it's split pea and bacon, I am all in...with some over-buttered croutons floating on top. Man, I need me some lunch.

I have to endorse working for Steve. As an artist and working with Steve (the original job poster) for years, I can say that if I were looking for a full time job and interested in relocating. I'd take him up on that. He has a good business and is a good level headed business man with much room for growth available as an artist.
So says Dot-Tone Dan
