Honestly, some of the stuff people make out of wood that's in close contact with heating elements is frightening. I saw some kind of a flash dryer housed in a wooden box that you slid the shirt into to cure it. That should've come with a complimentary fire extinguisher.

nope just the first one i saw for 300 bucks! but i don't run it all day long or leave it unattended what so ever but no issues yet...

Post up again in 18 years , thats how long my stahls swingaway has been working without needing repair,!  probably used at least every couple days.

18 years / 5 years = 3.6 x $300 = $1080

Hell, he might still come out a head.  But he does have to get "lucky" 3 times in a row.

There is also the issue of Calmshells vs. Swingaways and Sliders.
Cheaper clamshells, in particular, can provide some very uneven pressures by their very design, while some better designed clamshells may have something built into the mechanism to help compensate for the otherwise natural action of the non-parallel heat platen hitting the rear of the pad first.

Another obvious failing of some cheap machines is uneven heat across the platen.
Though sometimes not noticeable with "vinyls", can really show with digital transfers.

I just bought another stahls with the auto opening , not a swing away . i think the auto opening trumps the swingaway. The Ladies doing the heat press prefer it by far because the hardest part for them was opening the press. We also find you can start setting up the next shirt because it will auto open.
