Is it me?

It seems like lately everytime somebody calls they need stuff done yesterday.  This past week I don't think I had an order that came in where they said they need it in two weeks.  Everything has been "I need it tomorrow", or "I need in a couple of days". 

We had a Charter school from Chicago call us last Monday, they needed 5800 hats embroidered by last Thursday.  The woman that called had been on the phone most of the day calling all embroidery shops in northern Illinois looking for someone that could do it.  We wish we could have done it.  It would have been a good check.  Why is poor planning becoming the norm?  These people must think we can pull this stuff out of our butts and deliver it in a day.  Enough of my rant.

Common, and a definite niche, and one of my specialties.
Every day or so, at least one call starting with something like "How soon can I get...?"
My usual reply, "that depends on just how deep your pockets are". I then go on to explain that indeed, I have been woken at 7:00am with a request to have some shirts designed and printed and ready for pick-up at 10:00 am with a considerable up-charge (back when we still used a computer for designing, but a camera for output, so no mean feat)
I have also been asked to merely shave a few days off of the normal turn-around, with only a slight mark-up. "So, time and cost can vary greatly, let's hear exactly what you need".

A very common call is "My boss wants these for a trade show this Saturday ."
Another is shirts for sports teams season end parties. Sometimes postponed on purpose to see if they could add "Champion" or something similar.

That rug really tied the room together, did it not?

Unfortunately, this phenon is now the rule. The instant gratification our society has become addicted to now has replaced the plan to suceed mentality.
In addition, the unwillingness to commit financially until the last minute has played a roll. Do I have money in my hand? Do I wait till payday on Friday? Did we get a check in the mail so we can get new business shirts? Did I have a good week at the restaurant and can I spend this now?
Makes a business model difficult and expensive to build to. Need more capacity for the instant delivery than you might otherwise consider.
But, since it's the norm, plan foe=r it and you'll probably suceed. We have taken advantage of some of this, but have not quite got to where we plan to be. The art seems to be the biggest ag.

FOr the last few years, I've had screen print customers have me do a rush job for them like next day. "Gotta have it by tomorrow" on occasions, even calling at 9pm asking for it by 9am.  I'm no stranger to this, but what amazes me is that when I check back a few days later to see how that job printed yet or to get a picture of the print, "Oh,  Well, we didn't print that job yet".  :o

I'm not complaining.  LOL.  You all can request what you want as long as you pay for it. :)

Just as we printers have had rushed jobs sit waiting to be picked up.

It's a head scratcher sometimes.
