AI line screen question

not sure how to that, but I have templates with standard colors in them and the lpi and angles set up for them. When I start a new project, I open a template and use the inks in it. THis way everything is ready to go . . .

this is on the AI side. I have different colors for each job, not set of standard colors

There is a file called CMYK_default.ai or something similar that you can open edit and save, and everytime you start a new document it will use those settings. It's how I set up my stock ink swatches and symbols. Haven't tried print settings but I bet it would work.

Those are settings for a default color swatches, which is fine. You can make a spot swatch for every color you have in stock or can make, but how do you pre-determine the line screen and angle settings for a color?

You can edit the PPD that your printer uses, that should give you a range of choices in the window.

when I try to edit the PPD I have nothing in the color, line screen window because I don't have a document open, just the PPD edit window. what next?

I'll have to get into Illy and look to be 100% accurate, but from what i remember, your halftone (line screen) settings are done two ways.

1st way, Your separation setup (like when you print seps straight out of Illy to a post script printer), you can put in your own line screens. It comes with a default setting (like usually something to high for us like 75 or 85lpi. If you're using a postscruipt printer and use the separation setup, I don't know anyone that has ever "changed" the default settings as it's not that important to have them be where you want them when you go into it. Just change them again. Besides, are you ALWAYS going to only use one line screen? Prob. not.

2nd way, is through your RIP and each RIP is different.

Really, try editing the default_cmyk file, go to print, set your lpi/angle, etc, then save the file.
You might have to create a black box or whatever to be able to get to the lpi/angle settings. Just hit "done" and then
delete the "artwork" and save the file.

If you set your print options in a file and then save it, the print options go with it.

I tried saving the line screen in a template and that worked for the process colors. We do  a lot of contract work with files that are already set up with colors  so I never have a standard set of colors in each file. I may have to beat the line screen issue in the head of the person who runs our I-Screen machine, it sure would be easier on my end.
