This all sounds like more trouble than it's worth... no copyright, no high-res image, no money.... !

Dan's right, if they had rights to this art, the artist or agency that sold them the rights didn't give them a high-res copy? Even stock photo/art websites that sell low-res images have a bigger standard size than that.

It's not about being copyright police, its about not being an accomplice in a copyright crime.

Thanks for all the imput. I understand what your saying Dan and others about the copyright and am not in no means wanting to still someones art. So do we say no to the job and they go down the street and he or she does it and we feel good about our selves but are out a grand ? I am in no ways a thief and I know they got it off the internet due to the poor image but I have no idea where it came from. I will let ya'll know the verdict. Thanks for the input on cleaning the or a rough image.

Well, you could sell drugs and make a lot of money too, after all, someone around you is. I think it's about your safety as much as using someone's image without permission. I'd pass. After all, what's the person down the street going to do with the crap art anyway? Print crap probably, and not get paid for his trouble.

One way to know for sure if someone owns the art/rights to reproduce:

I do art.
In fact, I do great art ( that's interpretive, but whatever ).

If I'm going to have my art reproduced, I'm going to make sure the person
reproducing it has the best quality image I can provide them with,
not a small web pic or email preview.

Simple enough, I would say.

Sometimes they do own the artwork but send you a low res bitmap anyway. When you call to ask them for an original they will invariably say "This is all we have." Then when you suggest to them that whoever designed the logo for them would have the original, they will tell you they don't have any way of knowing who did it.

They don't know how lazy and nonchalant this makes them seem, and often they really don't care. The sooner they get you off the phone the sooner they can go home.

In cases like this, I usually just redraw the damn thing so I can be done with it.

I get a lot of people that want to knock designs off.  I tell them that I can't reproduce that exactly, but I can do our interpretation of it.  Most of the time they are fine since they know I can't legally print it.

Just yesterday, since I offer rush jobs, someone wanted this done (because the site on which they found it could not deliver by Friday).

I'm not a farm boy...But aren't you only supposed to tie three of the pig's legs? (Or is that only for cows?

Perhaps Crooked I, Joe Budden, Joell Ortiz and Royce da 5'9" are not farm boys (or Muslims or Kosher Jews, lol!)
Other than that, you'd have to take it up with their album cover artist, who hopefully appreciates me not reproducing his work.

I did pass the job and used the not my art reason and also that what they had was very bad art soooo I guess it will go down the street. Someone said something about bad prints from the design sent but have you really checked out what is in some retail stores???? Pitiful and they are selling left and right. I sometimes think we as printers are to hard on ourselves, what we see the Joe Blow never notices only another printer. How many shoppers look at a screened shirt and say "Man they were really out of registration on this design". Just saying
and for the record I have many, many shirts that I use for line-ups that did not make my cut.

The thing with low-rez pics that I often receive, is I have them output one at their end, enlarged to the size they wish. They often then see what I mean. Even if the art is legit but crappy, this would at least show them either what to expect at the standard "camera ready" price, or justification for an "art-fix" fee.

Many I receive are actual photos for digital transfers that they own, but snapped at "email or internet setting". Many folks don't know that many cameras automatically snap two versions.
