How would you separate this?

So do I do black and halftone the pink on this or do black and two pink colors? Any suggestions?

on big solid areas like this, a halftone will come out grainy and will not look as good as three spot colors. I give the customers a choice if they are looking to save money, but otherwise, as John said, print is as spot.

I always eyeballed it! I'm curious too, though. I know that everyone's computer screens are different, and that pantone systems are the right way, but I haven't had a problem mixing by eye, yet. I think the correct way would be to get a pantone swatch set, although they may be too expensive for some jobs...

I think a small mixing system is a great investment. You can get quart sized kits for around $250 depending on the manufacturer. You should also get a Pantone color deck which aren't very cheap but necessary to show customers the hundreds upon hundreds of colors you can mix for them. You should upcharge for this service. Most people won't balk at paying extra for it.

Just offer them your stock colors at no extra charge or they can pick their own color for an extra $10-$20.

2nd the mixing system.

I got my Wilflex EPIC MX system with 2 gallons of white and some pantone books for a few bills over $400 bucks.

The best part about it, you don't have to eye it or add a little of this, little of that to make a color. You can make the same color time and time again and as little or as much as you need. When you're done with the color, you can use the recycling feature to mix it into something else to help keep inks levels on shelves down to a manageable level.

If its a large job or they will be coming back every other month or so I would let the ink company mix me a gal if its just a small order eyeball you a qt or enough to do the job.  I got an old Rutland color mixing book and I,ve mixed many colors by using there guide and I use Union inks.

The only time I got a gallon of custom ink, the customer went t*ts up.  I now have a 3/4 gallon of PMS 464...and it's ugly.

Well I just got off the phone and they decided to do a one color ribbon to save money. This job can't get easier. I think the next investment might be the ink system time to get more professional. I know wilflex is popular any other recommendations?

coming in late but figured I would chime in anyway.

Two pinks would have looked better yet will do ok with one.  You could have mixed a tiny amount of white with your pink to get the lighter pink yet using a mixing system is definitely something you should consider.   I used both the Rutland Plasticol mixing system as well as the Wilflex PC system. Both have their advantages and disadvantages.
