Need Solenoid help
« on: November 25, 2019, 10:58:56 AM »
Having trouble sourcing a replacement for the attached image. It is a solenoid valve, 24v made by EMC a rip off of SMC. It is a complicated little gadget and having trouble finding it, it doesnt seem possible to get it from EMC and do not want to anyways since it is of dubious origin. I would prefer SMC or something with similar but I cannot seem understand how to match of the correct specs.

Anyone on here able to look at the pic and point me in the right direction?

Good news is we are going to be replacing this machine in January with a new M&R once we decide what we want.

Reason why I want to replace this solenoid is because it is the index lock valve and intermittently we can lock the index but refuses to unlock. I have gone through all the proxies and connections and usually if I remove this valve and jiggle it around it comes back, but I am not convinced it is the issue but willing to replace and see if it helps.

We've had to replace SMC parts before, though they all seem to take two weeks to get a part. I found a local distributor, hoping to cut out MHM and Hirsch, but because of the wait, had to go with the more expensive option. Perhaps one of their distributors could help you source out a suitable replacement? Just a thought, but we've had to hack in assorted controllers and what not over the years to keep older equipment running, and there always seemed to be an alternative...

Mike, there's one on Ebay, it'll last until you get a new press.

Nice find but not sure I could finagle that one to work, mine is a single is stuffed into a tight space, this one looks different.

If I remember correctly there are two valves stacked in the base under the cover. One index lock the other is lift. Swap the two and see if that helps. May even swap it with one on the print head, maybe the flash head.
I doubt you will find just the solenoid. But if push comes to shove any 24v 1/8"npt valve will work. My std answer is I am sure Mc Master Carr has something that will work.
There are also little flow controls on the lines coming out of the valve. Might have one with crap in it acting like a valve.
I am going to service one of those machines here in the next few weeks, I can see if they have a spare or at least measure it and find a replacement.

Its all good Brian, thanks for the advice. I actually figured out what the problem is this morning. There is a cracked solder joint on one of the PCB's. I figured since every morning is when this would happen but would eventually go away it may be temp related. So this morning I turned the machine on made sure the error was present then took a heat gun to the PCB's on top and sure enough after about twenty seconds of heat I was able to disengage the index. Question now is do I go at it with a solder iron or take to someone for a reflow?

I would find an electronics repair place and let them do it.
Parts are still available from the OEM if needed.
