right on. but a year ago those refurbs were 199.00 factory direct from epson

They aren’t cheap anymore. We bought two for ~400 each. I am testing the p400 now, but holding on to the 1430’s just in case.

Ended up going with a refurbed from Ebay for 440.00

those are CRAZY numbers!!! I've been buying the 4800 and now 4880 for $400 or less for about 5 years now. It is a far superior printer for the positives to the 1430 series. It is at least 4 times faster and uses rolls instead of sheets, so it is cheaper to operate too. The ink cartridges hold 220mL of ink unlike the 1430 which holds 7mL.

Somebody enlighten me and explain why a 1430 would be worth the same money as a 48XX?

Not so much "worth" when comparing apples to apples performance, but more like the "worth" with collectibles. As soon as a model gets discontinued, folks with old stock see a gold mine! I bought a WF1100 for around $100 just as they were phased out. Great reputation as a lot of bang for the buck, nonetheless, entry-level wide format.
Within a year, ebay prices were as high as $700.

We just switched to a 7900 after our 1430 died.

I think a lot of people gravitate to the 1430 cause it's entry level that you can get with an all black (cobra ink) system and its easy to use with a rip. A bigger printer with rolls can be intimidating. At least it used to be to me. Also printers with rolla take upmore space. 1430 is nice and small on a desk.

 Now i'll never go back. Though it would be nice to have a 1430 or something similar as a backup. Looking for alternatives. now

No way I’d pay $400 for a 1430 though. Like Pierre said you can find the 4xxx series for that price and they’re way more economical to run in multiple ways.

I think that was the appeal.. PRICING. They work very well for the price of 199.00 then you get used to them as I was . FOR ME it was the 2200 then the r1800, r1900 then the 1400 then the 1430.. That was just the easy thing to do and I bought many 1800 and 1900 off ebay for 100 bucks.

I get that, and when the price is your constraint (which very often is), than $199 is a good deal. But when you are paying the same for a refurb 1430 as you would for a used 4800 the argument falls apart.
Also, I have seen the output from the COBRA style systems and would not wish that on my worst enemy for positive output (with all black. Single channel is probably OK).

I had a 1430 as a backup and it just quit one day, would not take any ink. It seems there is a software routine in the printer that resets the codes at some point in time and makes all your non EPSON cartridges obsolete. I was PISSED, box full of new ink went into the garbage.
