240v 3 phase to 208v 3 phase?
« on: March 02, 2018, 04:53:27 PM »
Our electrical will be different when we move.  The new building has 480v 3 phase coming in and a couple transformers that get 120v / 208v 3 phase.  Current building has 240v 3 phase.

Looks like most equipment (we have a lot of M&R stuff) will take 208-230v just fine.  Going from 240v-208v should be fine for the presses, flashes, other small equipment.

Would it be an issue for our air compressor that says 230v? (15hp rotary screw).  What about forklift charger (it can take either, but would have to be rewired potentially)? Anything else to lookout for?

Just want to be prepared for when we move.

We just did this, but one of our old dryers is under performing with 208V, (but it's old, not the most efficient) as is an old Hopkins Flash we have... everything else is working properly.

Flashes will run a little cooler. Compressor should be fine but most likely is actually 208-230/240.
Depending on the transformers and how the panels are laid out you may be able to change the taps to get 240.

I would prefer to run under a 240 system, uses less amps. depending on how your utilities company bills for business rates, you could pay more over the long run by dropping down to 208 and get underperforming equipment like stated in return.

If it was me, I’d get some 240 transformers and keep the key resistance equipment like flashes dryers and compressors on that line while everything else taps into 208
