Stubborn water based ink stains! and tape!
« on: November 23, 2017, 10:52:19 AM »
I've been a plastisol printer, but since getting a 36"x9' brown dryer, I'm starting to get into some water base and discharge.

I had an 800 shirt print run with brite blue and black on a white pc150 shirt.  Instead of using the wilflex black plastisol, I used a gallon of Green Galaxy Pitch Black waterbased through a 200 mesh coated 2/1 with Kiwo Polycol multitex.

No stencil breakdown, but the mesh stained even where the emulsion was.  So basically a black stain over the entire screen area.  I use a Easiway 701 and a Supra for the dip and still had stains.  Tried more 701, kiwo haze, etc.....

Any suggestions?

Also - I use 3" PMI split tape, and water base ink seems to creep through.  Any trick to using split tape for water base, or should I use full adhesive tape?

Thanks!

If you used that 701 before the dip, or if you used it as an on-press cleaner I’d guess that’s your problem. It’s a stain remover, but also a stain locker if not used correctly. I think the idea is that it loosens the ink pigments from the binders but if you don’t rinse it properly those same pigments will lock back into the mesh even harder.

So that’d be the first place I look. Make sure any on-press or pre-reclaim cleaners are meant for the job.

There can be many factors at play here. Send me an email to discuss.

Agreed, I'd like to feed off this too! Always find there's a residual ghost from heavy pigment wb's

I use some water based textile inks with manual printing and they all seem to stain.

I use a lot of water based inks for poster printing with an auto press and they stain for sure.  especially black.  especially on a longer run.  I've always figured it was just the nature of H2O inks but would love to hear if anybody has some remedies.

Of course not all wb inks and reclaim technology is not created equal. Coarse ground pigments can be a culprit and since mos blacks are carbon based they can be especially aggressive. Reclaim immediately and experiment. We do not have this problem

Do you clean with plain water, or one of the detergent products?

Mesh that has been abraded can also hold pigment and cause issues.
Depending on when you send it to reclaim and the state of the ink changes the products we would suggest.

Reclaiming the screen right after the run isn't always in the plans.  Sometimes I need to use the screen again the next day to complete the run, or in the following weeks for reorders.

However, after I'm done with the printing run I'll card off excess ink, take out the screen and wash it with water to clear ink out of the print area.   Some of the emulsion gets stained, and thought it was just the emulsion, but when I reclaim, the previously emulsed mesh is dark.

Can it stain through the emulsion?  I don't have any problems with any other color.    I generally coat 1/1 round on 200 or 230.

We have exactly the same issue, black ink stains all over the screen post reclaim. To date I have not found a solution.

We are using Virus Hydra 120 and Perfetto and black is worst, but recently screens used with a red and blue PMS colour also have significant staining.

I use 701 as my degrease and dehaze. If i reclaim within a day or so of use, it will temove the WB ink stains. If they work longer the haze is pretty much permanent.

To answer the tape question.  I use ICC clear blockout tape for water based.  It's expensive but works very well.

Some tapes I've tried will degrade from water based and pull little goobers of the adhesive into your ink well which then get stuck in the screen openings.

I think the under exposed screens contributed to the problem.
