has anyone ever used this before.  it is from microsoft and is a folder sync tool.     purchased another external drive and want to have artwork backed up on it but wanted real time.  all back up software I was able to find worked but not as I wanted.    plus this is free and just wanted a syc drive like google and drop box are.

Here's one I've been using at least 6 or more years from Sourceforge and it also is free. 

It does not backup automatically, but I use it to backup folders/files to a docked hard drive and then back into the safe it goes.

You set up whatever profiles (actually folders-can have tons of sub folders or few under) you want to sync between the "source" drive and the "target" drive. 

Right click for Preview (shows what will be archived/deleted) and then to select Synchronize when ready to actually have it do it. 

In my case, I have about 8 folders defined and can simply run down thru them to "preview" and only run the sync option on the ones where something actually was found to have changed (or was added/deleted).

Why not just use google cloud drive as backup? Keeps a local copy and live syncs to the cloud. The cloud will always be more reliable than physical hardware on site. The argument used to be that you'd have to have an internet connection at all times, but who DOESN'T have a high speed connection 24/7 these days? I think I pay $1.99/mo for 100Gb of storage.

Seems like the way to go for everyone but a external hard drive doesn't hurt.

we do use google drive but we also like to have a physical back up.

the 2 programs above are similar but I do like screenexpress better.  his allows you to schedule them to sync as the other does not.  must do it manually.   the toysyc program though allows you to sync across networks but the other does not(only physical drive attached to the pc)

I've been using Synchronicity for over 6 years and never noticed the "scheduling" feature.

Having said that, I do like checking what is going to happen in the "preview" step which I would lose on a "scheduled" run.

It's all about 3-2-1 backup. 3 places, 2 locations, 1 of them off-site.

I highly suggest CrashPlan. Cheap and let's you backup to our own local sources like hard drives, and also to the cloud.

It's as easy as installing Google drive on another machine in the same shop or at home. Drive will always be synced with a local hard copy.

Yes I am suggesting that an external hard drive, sync software, time to set up and maintain, is hurting your business. Time = money. Hardware = money.

Technology advances, we adopt it because it makes life easier so there's no need for the old way. Just my opinion though!

i have looked at all of the cloud services. and the money is a little steep when I can have a few external raid drives that are synced with the main art files so we have several back ups at different locations.

reason I say the cost is not effective for us is we have 800+ gig (sceenprint, embroider, dye sub, cut vinyl. etc)of artwork.  could not find something which did not break the bank.   but the sync programs are exactly what I was wanting.  very simple to set up.  was able to use the program over a network with the drive being mapped.   so now all artwork is on a schedule to be synced to 3 different places which all 3 have a raid set up.
