The best equipment cleaner EVER.
« on: May 21, 2017, 08:12:11 PM »
Everyone.. I believe this will be my most important contribution to this site ever... unless someone else suggested this before and I couldn't find it.. if that is the case please (admin) delete this post.

Recently I've been obsessed with cleaning my equipment.  Some parts of the presses are cleaned regularly, others never, and it's freaking disgusting.  I've tried a bunch of cleaners.  If they do work they require a lot of elbow grease to really make a difference.

Anyway, here it it.  GOO OFF!  I picked some up the other day, it's amazing.  I can address a years worth of built up tack/lint/etc with a few drops of this stuff and it CUTS RIGHT THROUGH.  It's like a brand new press/dryer/floor.

Full disclosure - I've tried this on a very small portion of my equipment just incase it destroys the paint or whatever.  That was a week ago, paint is fine.

-Is this any different from Goo Gone, or similar citrus cleaners?
-Where do you get it from?
-And does it leave a residue of its own, as most citrus cleaner does? I.e., after you clean something with it, will masking tape/pallet tape stick to the cleaned surface?

I've got a "new-to-me" used press I'm cleaning up - a lot of old spray tack + lint to address. May try this stuff out if the cleaners I have on hand don't do a good job.

If you are talking about "Goof Off"... I've had good luck with it too.
The MSDS lists it as having both acetone & xylene in it... so, the appropriate safety gear should be used (gloves, eye protection, respirator).
These are powerful hydrocarbon chemicals with high flammability...  good ventilation is required.

You may find xylene is less expensive and evaporates slower, allowing it to clean longer.
Keep in mind the Goof Off looks like a tame household cleaner... but it can be Bad crap.

There's goo gone and goof off.

Both seem to have pretty good reviews.  I will say Goof Off is pretty serious stuff.  I've used it and it usually ruined what I needed it to clean.

we have found if you get your machine cleaned up real nice then go back and wipe it down with WD40 then the next time you clean it will be much easier as the lint/dust will not stick to the machine.

There are a couple different types of goof off. "Pro Strength Remover" and "Pro Strength Stripper".

Do not under any circumstances use the stripper on your press....It eats all of the paint and leaves you with bare metal. Unless of course you want that old school vintage rust look.

The stripper is very nasty stuff and will lead to chemical burns without very good protection. We use the stripper when we refurb used roller frames. No matter how much protection we use, one off us (usually me), ends up with a burn.

I have not used the goof off "pro strength remover", but I'm guessing its a bit milder and should not be confused with the stripper by the same name.

There is as well "Goo Gone Surface Safe". Warning on the label says "Fatal" if swallowed.
