Wow you guys are a little hard on Endless. Endless I understand what your doing. I am the same way. When things are going bad you have to do something to get it going in the right direction. (Even if its just to put yourself in a better mood) Maybe buying the Workhorse is that for you.

Now for the guys that want you to buy a auto. Why would someone that does not have enough work for a manual even think of taking on the cost of an auto and the cost to have a auto set up. Trust me I know autos are great but the learning curve and costs in the beginning are enough to put a slow shop out of business. You guys have great advice I respect everyone’s of you but right now is not the time for Endless to get a auto.

Now is not the time to buy and refurbish a manual press either.  Or even buy a manual press.  It make zero sense for a 1 man show to own 2 manual presses that are so similar.

Homer, why does that press only have a 14" print stroke?  It looked like in one of your old videos the image was starting really low.

As much as I'd love to take that press of your hands Screened Gear is right, I dont have that kind of bank, unless my college customer starts placing orders as big as last years.

I wouldn't say hard is the right word. Maybe blunt and no pussy footin' around would be a better way to describe it. Tough love may even fit.
The amount of help here and offered in person is amazing and speaks volumes for how helpful this place and people are.
I applaud Endless for not having thin skin and the rest of the board for not piling on.

I am a manual shop that just invested in a used auto to prepare for work to come. I have yet to fire it up and learn how to print on it but I will say depending on your market a manual only shop just does not make sense. My market is saturated with printers and if you want to compete on the large jobs with multiple bidders you have to find a way to get the job done in the fastest manner possible. We barely won a bid for 500 pieces blue shirt white ink 2 sides. I knew I was going up against auto shops and bid like I had an auto and got the job. We still made about $40 per hour profit but what could have that been with an auto? $200? $300? And I only won the bid by about $20.00!

So I think your market should be a big factor on whether you should go auto or not. Not only that you can get into a used auto as cheap as a new manual when you find the right deal.

Don't look at the price of them new as a pro/con.  Jennings presses are good, but overpriced.  The only way you are going to learn which to keep is to print on both and figure out which one you prefer.

Yes, they are VERY overpriced but I understand why. He builds them as he sells them, been to his shop nothing compared to the Workhorse plant. Very small operation. Feels more like a mom and pop shop.

1. Manual, or auto, one can never have too many heads. Even if they are on different presses, they allow multiple set-ups which come in handy on jobs as simple as a four color back along with a three color front.

2. Add to that, the complications when a couple of shirts are found to be defective, and the job set-up must linger for another day while replacements are being sent.

4. Even an additional one color press can find use staying permanently set up with an oft-used label.

5. For shops doing sports, a press dedicated to numbers can be a blessing.

6. This all assumes that one has the space.


The other distant possibility here is that having the space, Shawn now discovers a whole new facet of the industry of buying and selling used equipment. There are bargains, and there are folks who need something now, or need something gone now. The man with space can take advantage.

Hell, he wouldn't be the first guy we knew on a forum to completely change his focus to dealing equipment!

And a note to Screened Gear;
Many of us knew Shawn back when...
we have earned a certain  privileged familiarity in this respect, as we have shared all of his ups and downs since his humble beginnings.

Now, if only he'd study the available categories here, and sometimes make more appropriate choices as to where to post. Some of his posts in the Generalsection, can be a Major concern, as they belong in a more Private area. I am considering Corporal punishment, or at least busting his rank.

In all honestly I looked for the "pricing section for screen printing" didn't see it, but now I know.

Stupid or not, the second press WILL come in very handy like the reasons you just mentioned. I'm curious though what happend to #3?

My contract guy has 1 auto , 2  6 color manauls and a 1 color press and on any given day he has employees on all of them. People say I need a mentor, he's kinda of one them. We both started from home based businesses. Contract work is a huge part of his success and noted... when I get that auto.
