I have plenty of friends and family (even an ex gf) living in France. Following the news and trying to contact everyone to know their whereabouts was horrible. I knew one of my friends was at a concert so my heart nearly stopped when I heard about the Bataclan (it's a very famous venue).

9/11 changed all our lives but this one was personal for me and, I'm sure, a lot of europeans.

I fear it is only going to get worse and all the perks of living here are about to disappear. The international community has to give these terrorists a strong message that this has to stop.

I'm not religious so I won't pray but my heart and thoughts are with everyone that was harmed

I'll second all the above.
This is Europe's 9/11 and it's hard to comprehend.

I worry about you and your family alot Maxie.  From what it looks like from where we're at you're in the middle of a very hostile land.

As EU goes through post 9/11 stuff we went through, hopefully they will learn from our mistakes and avoid some significant blunders we have committed. From what I can tell the TSA is a dog an pony show that spent about $500 BILLION and prevented nothing we are aware of. http://www.cnn.com/2015/06/05/opinions/schneier-tsa-security/ That kind of money would have cured cancer by now and potentially saved millions of ppl. . .

Bomb the crap out of them so there is nobody left and it sends the msg to anybody considering it later!

Yes, we've won our share of awards, and yes, I've tested stuff and read the scientific papers, but ultimately take everything I say with more than just a grain of salt! So if you are looking for trouble, just do as I say or even better, do something I said years ago!

I'm confident that Pierre knows more about the web than I...or perhaps most of you do. And these TSA comments make me wonder about something related.

What do the reports mean, that the terrorists may be organizing under the intelligence radar, by "going dark?" I thought every phone call, every text, every email that I generate is being traced. (I dislike the idea, but "it is what it is"...)

don't want to stray too far off topic (I'll split it if we do), but essentially it would mean the terrorists are not using digital means to communicate. They resorting back to snail mail and couriers, in person meetings and other things that can not be monitored from afar. In other words, we need more feet on the ground and ppl infiltrating these organizations.

It's not hard for them to go dark. As being pointed, they could use traditional forms of communication. It has also been said they might be using old phones, they're untraceable in terms of location (no GPS capabilities).

TSA or any government body SHOULD NOT and cannot boast about their successes. It has been said the french Secret Services have aborted 6 attacks in 2015 alone. We have just found this out. There would be mass panic if they were to tell us about every sneaky plan that they uncover. It's best for us not to know.

Don't worry, they're doing their job. Thankfully most of these terrorists don't know how to plan a decent attack, a lot more people could have been hurt in France if they did

The terrorists only have to get lucky once to be successful and the ones working to stop them have to be lucky and good 100% of the time to truly be successful.  Roughly translated from something Mags Thatcher said once.

I love Paris, my favorite city in the world.  Visited numerous times as my wife used to be a French teacher. The shopping center that was attacked is one of my favorite spots to shop, been there numerous times.  Prayers for sure.
