I was in on Wed... out on Thur... and walking with a cane by Friday.

I was just talking on Thursday with DTD about the advances in this. A few years ago, you would have been on your back (with foam barriers to keep you from turning) in the hospital for the first few days.

My wife's knee, they tell us, in for three days two nights.

My ortho guy is telling me total knee replacement on day 1 as an outpatient so no overnight hosp stay, 2-a-day physical therapy starting on day 2 thru day 5 and back to a desk with a cane on day 7.

I am still chicken to schedule it, figure I can put up with a lot more discomfort before they get out the knife.

Though no one likes to stay in (or pay for) a hospital any longer than absolutely required, it is somewhat heartening to see that Kaiser is not merely shoving her out ASAP like seems to have been the case for the last few decades of managed health care.
Apparently, the physical therapy will commence almost right away while she's still there, and of course, she can be closely monitored.

My son had a torn ACL last year in and out in one day if I,m thinking back correct..... I need to have my knee worked on but just can't find the time to take off and get it done.  Standing all day loading/unloading shirts can play hell on old knees like mine, but hey good luck Frog to your wife and North take it easy fella.

Yep.... it's all about getting rid of the pain. Mine got bad towards the end, but was tolerable for almost a year.
I've developed a real apathy for people who have to live with pain everyday.
I think back pain is the scariest.

Good luck with a speedy recovery; that's one type of upgrade I would certainly try to avoid, but aging does what it will...

i was not looking forward to the hernia op, but it was easier than they said.  I missed one day...thursday, I was back in on friday but sitting and I didn't drive.

I was really nervous about it, and I was worried over nothing

My dad had his hip replaced 12 years ago and I've never seen him so miserable.  But he didn't use his pain pills after the first day home so that had a lot to do with it.  I've heard knee replacements are pretty tough, and on par with hip replacements. 

Dirk, you're meniscus repair will be easier compared to an ACL, PCL, medial and lateral ligament repair but most of the time you will be on crutches for longer than had you done the ACL surgery where you're on your feet the next day.  I've had both done and feel I got back to 100% from the ACL and it's been downhill since the meniscus surgeries.  The meniscus repair sucks because I personally think it opened up the door to future issues.  I tore my meniscus just throwing a ball from third to first a year after my first meniscus repair and the knee is never going to be close to where it was before the surgeries.  My ortho told me to get prepared for the knee replacement.

This is what we hear about both joints.
Not only better product, but new tricks have been learned, and many surgeons have literally hundreds of these procedures under their belt now.
Greg's out in a few hours still seems a little off to me though.

A few years back, we had hips done on a few dogs, and one particular surgeon did this as his specialty and traveled around the country.
We went with him when he was here because he was the fastest in and out.
The ongoing problem we had was how to convince our shepherds to take it easy during the recovery period.
