Custy sends me a crap load of sponsor logos each taken from thw web at about 70 x 70 dpi, wants them printed on the shirts due tomorrow....
we say impossible need to convert to vector art at 15 to 20 dollars each image.
Custy says other teams have the sponsor logos on tee shirts...
I say yes because they have vector art either paid and converted or supplied as vector from sponsor.
we agree to simple list of customer names...
OK I can do that....
custy calls back says she can vectorize  all the images overnight...
we say I can too at $30.00 - $40 00 ea...
she says she can do it with software she has from the net....( note custy is a computer /software professional at a big a$$ company)

Vector logos show up today......she used INKSCAPE  and said vectors attached.
See the results below...as you know the files are VECTOR and were all FREE.......

fyi, when we get these, we send them directly off to copyartwork.com ... $17 total or the whole whack of them.
art looks good, custy happy, we're happy.  not worth my time to even argue with them.  cost of vectorizing front and back is 'auto-included' in our quote... for some good customers, I'll subtract that amount, but I never tell them I'm doing it.

I do a ton of those sponsor filled backs, what works for me about 80% of the time in Corel:

-Google image search the logo or use supplied low res. .jpeg and import or C&P into Coreldraw
-if resolution is too low at size, click bitmaps, resample and punch in 200 dpi or so.
-click bitmaps, mode, black and white and select "line art" then adjust the threshold until you get the detail you need
(sometimes different areas of the image need different thresholds to get the detail to show in black and white, I duplicate the .jpg right over top, adjust the top one to get one section looking good, the edit envelope to show the other, bottom copy of the jpg. and adjust the threshold for it separately.)

these black and white jpgs are fine for printing film.

occasionally I'll have to re-typeset some text if it's too bad, but on average I'm about 2-3 minutes tops for art per low-res logo

Attached is a quick example of "The Shirt Board" header done this way, the black and white version is two stacked to get the text to show up, and the detail in the "no trolls" logo.

My favorite ever from a client after asking for a .jpg in vector was receiving "vectorlogo.jpg" back from them.

The way we look at it is we're the experts and we're here to help them get their job done, we just charge accordingly, but 80%+ of supplied logos can be made to work very quickly.

yup.  they charge it as the 'difficult' job.

I basically do what inkworks said.  Typically you can find higher rez stuff by either searching online quickly or messing with resolution and threshhold.  Here are pretty much all the quick tricks to finding vector logos: http://www.mmprint.com/blog/2011/how-to-find-vector-corporate-logos-hi-res-product-images/  I am always surprised how easy it is to find a pdf of a memo or some press release with a vector logo in the header on a companies site, usually sitting in some unlinked random folder but visible to Google's spiders, and its as simple as opening it up and popping the logo into your file, desaturating or whatever, etc.  Most backs take less than an hour with a couple searches, a couple quick manual edits, and playing with some levels/threshold, magic wand, etc.

I also am amazed at how many vector logos are embedded in .pdf's. But, I'm only going to spend so much time searching for free. My favorite work around is to tweak the jpeg a little, then convert it to grayscale (use the Black & White filter under Adjustments first) in Photoshop, then convert to Bitmap, using halftone with the output resolution set to 1200; that makes very clean dots, and the image prints pretty well.

I have a 15 minute rule. If I can't do it in that amount of time, I send it out. I get it back within 24 hours (sometimes same day). It's usually $10 (normal logos).

Depending on who the customer is, I usually don't pass the charge along. Customers don't understand, they just want it on their shirt. $10 makes the job run quick and smooth.

Regular customers who design their own artwork and can't figure out how to create a useable file, get charged $20. Customers who I would rather not deal with, but am, $20.

Something like this, I would imagine I could send out and it would be about $20. Depending on the volume/profit in the order, I would charge anywhere from $0-50.

On a side note, I think you may have landed one of my customers Moose ;-)
