I have this talk with a lot of friends that also hire folks.  One of my tennis buddies tries to get retirees to come back so he knows what he's getting and won't go through 5 people to find 1 good one.

HAHAHA, ok, you keep telling yourself that.  You would not believe how many absolutely stupid and unmotivated kids there are out there.  How many people have you hired in the last 5 years?

From the sounds of it, not many.

Yes, I'm sure there are "many absolutely stupid and unmotivated kids there are out there". I choose not to hire those. Maybe you need a real HR department or better screening.

Sam, yes, it is frustrating (maddening, really) when adults can't be bothered to work.

No, "Kids today" do not to go to work somewhere else, they go to spend time in the basement playing video games and sleeping. They make enough money to buy top-off-the-line phone, buy new sneakers, and new video game that just came out, and after that, they are on the couch until they get bored.

Those are "kids today", at least 80% of them. I do not know how it was growing up in the Sates, but I can tell you one thing, growing up in Croatia/Serbia was not fun after 1990 and it is still not fun.

What else are kids supposed to be working for? Their 401k retirement savings plan or what?
Same story, different generation.
80%? Really?

The question is not what they are supposed to be working for!
If they work for all that, that is OK......... BUT, they can keep the job and they can keep working after they earn enough money to buy all of that. Not many of them will do that.

I see a lot less drive from kids nowadays than my friends and I had.  We were always out mowing lawns, or doing anything else we could for extra cash.

It's the same thing as "older people" that will go out and blow their paycheck on partying over the weekend and miss monday.  I am telling you, the best employee I've had were foreign.  Except for a handful, and maybe that is the 20% DK was talking about.

I like Dave Ramsey, who says that kids should start working from a very young age.  They should get paid to do the chores...it's called their allowance.  It ingrains in them from a young age the connection between work and reward.

I wonder if you paid them like I get paid I. The automotive industry, flat rate or some call it piece work. .25 a shirt or something....I know it motivates me but I do have kids, a house, car note and other thing you know a "life"..;)~ which keeps me going everyday.

I referred to him as a kid. He is 28 which is a kid to me. Turns out he is divorced and has kids which I really don't think he gives a sh!t about.  I should have known better than to get involved but he ask me for work. I don't have time for the F'ing white trash drama.

Oh and did I mention I think he drinks heavily. Last time I checked, booze costs money and I'm pretty damn sure you can't buy it with food stamps.

But the can buy a candy bar and turn around and use the change to buy the booze. I used to work at a grocery store and years ago and they used to do it all the time.

I have to agree.

To make a long story short, I am helping an extra 19 year old young man out. He's living with us temporarily until he goes off to the army 'So he says right now".  He and my son get along just great. Two pea's in a pod. Should have been twins.

My son claims to be entering into the Police academy in a few months, and the other claims to be going into the army in a few months. Both are unemployed and both sit and play computer games all evening and also watch cartoons (again, they are both 19). The wife is an enabler and I get in trouble for being a bad guy when they get upset that I try to have them be more responsible and have them to do more around the house...anyways,

The thing I notice with these kids today, they don't have much ability to take initiative. These two will do whatever I ask (reluctantly and sulking) while they do it....but only when I ask. Then, they ONLY do what I tell them. If I give them a job of sweeping the floors, They only sweep the area that I was in when I told them. They don't get the steps and any other room other than what they were in when I told them.

They have some basic chores to do every day, the same set of things (every day) before the wife gets home. I'm out in the office working at 8:00 till ...well, still at 12:15am and these knuckleheads sleep in till 2:00 in the afternoon and then try to get out of the house before I can see them so they can evade the chores. Wash dishes (the ones they made while cooking pizza at 2am the night before) and also sweep the floors.  Thats it.
Guess what, I gotta keep an eye on them and the time to make sure they get it done before the wife gets home. I was ready to kick the one guy out a few times and the wife didn't want to go that route. I mean, he IS living with us...RENT FREE for like almost two months now and on occasions, has the nerve to get upset WITH ME because I ask him to do something....when he's tired from staying up all night playing and watching tv.

I know what you're gonna say, so. I agree. I'm just keeping the peace right now. Soon, my wrath will come down. >:(

Now, I will give them all the benefit of saying,  I don't totally blame the kids until after they become more mature. I consider teenagers in the handicapped or slightly retarded category. No offense to the mentally challenged community, (me included).

The Dr's will tell you that the pre frontal lobe (the part of the brain that we use to make good decisions) does not fully develop until near age 25.

Well said Dan I have been saying kids are mentally retarded ever since my son turned 12 lol, I am trying to show my son 14 and two of his friends 15 and  17 how to print, after pulling the squeegee about 15 times they all gave up. When I asked them if they want to learn the business they all said they changed their mind, that they did not know it would be so physical. Its unreal I was doing auto body work for my dad at 12 and when I was 14  I started to do construction work with a neighbor, and they dont want to pull a squeegee because its too hard and too boring. I am really afraid for their futures.

Well my problem employee hung herself on Thursday. I caught her forging her time card after taking an hour and a half lunch. This was on the same day she was 2 hours late. She's looking for a new job now.

My friends are all looking for that desk job that requires no working and a paycheck. Some of them found it. On the other hand, I've been with the same shop since I was 17. I'll be 23 next year and my boss is slowly but surely getting me to take over the shop. I respect and appreciate hard work. I'm embarrassed by my generations work ethic and I apologize to you elder shop owners that have to deal with the slackers.

I hire an older lady who works 2 jobs now, nights at Wally world and days in school cafeteria. She works with me on an on call basis when i need her to fold , box, clean screens, catch shirts  etc.
After 18 years at walmart they pay her $14.00 / hr.  for which they time her every job, wright her up for clocking out 10 minutes too late. We pay $10.00 / hr cash on the spot and buy the occasional lunch. Gail is worth every penny, she cleans up in idle time, she knows how to work with customers and really cares about the work she does.

I had the same deal with 2 other people, one adult guy with a disability and one older lady. They didn't make the cut. Gail has been working with us for about 2 years guess we are really lucky and I would be hard pressed to replace her. Maybe I will give her a raise.

At my "other job" we struggled to find good "kids" for warehouse work/ delivery drivers. The owners of the company always thought it was a young man job which always turned into a disaster with calling in sick, hung over, theft etc. etc. I finally convinced them to look at a couple guys that worked warehouse all their life but were in their mid to late 50s and we finally hired them and we have had the best "back room" we have ever had with no complaints, no calling in, no drugs, just consistent high quality work and I never have to tell them what to do. They are just on the ball!
