How many people watch TV while working?
« on: August 08, 2011, 01:36:14 AM »
I used to listen to the radio while working. These days, I find myself needing nothing on. No radio and no TV.
When I worked with other artist, I often found that they need "something" on. Some kind of white noise.

I'm working now but was going to watch (or have on) Rango the lizard. Ive been wanting to watch it but can't just sit down and watch TV or a movie these days so. I was going to watch it on my monitor whilst working (or going to try working).

At Disney, we had several artist actually have a TV in the office and playing while they work. It was something they were used to at home while being a freelance artist and when they too on the full time job, they got to keep that habit.  Some say it's pampering the "artist" but I know it to be part of the creative process. Watching TV while working. Something about white noise helps the brain (I guess).

My son used that excuse before when he was doing homework. He's blare his stereo while doing it. How can you concentrate while blaring the stereo?  Con foundit blasted noise!

I'll let you know how it goes for me.

I can't be distracted when printing on my auto, my neighbor use to come over while I was printing and the next thing I know I am running out of ink and not catching it. I have screwed up 10-20 shirts before I realize it. This has happened more that once. Now I just shut down and visit with him, about 10-15 min. Then I tell him I got to get back to work. So NO I can't have any distractions .

Even though I may not necessarily be "watching", I at least have the TV on for company.

I don't get watching TV at work. I listen to some music, but not constantly as I like it too much and would rather listen than work.

I have a TV in the shop area and keep it on just to hear the noise and news, no cable just the rabbit ears...my wife has her radio channel on the computer she listen to up front.  I can tune it out when we're really getting down to work I just like having it on to pass the day.

the other day our young summer help guy packed 4 reject shirts in with the good ones, and taped it up, and off it went. I think it's because he's got headphones in his ears and is too busy groovin' to the tunes to give us his full attention. They were obvious rejects, and weren't checked off on the paper work as complete. He just spaced... not that I haven't but I knew why Idid, when I did, and realized that if my boss was paying me, I should give him my best while at work. Still a good kid though, when I shared it with him this morning, he was appropriately sorry for being a bonehead...

I've tried it, (I'm an artist at a computer workstation)... dual monitors are good for that... but I find myself tuning it out and then I don't know what's going on. When I watch a flick, especially a digital animation like Rango, I want to pay full attention. Those animators have fun hiding details that are easy to miss.

Music is good, also podcasts of historical lectures. Stuff that used to put me to sleep in high school I now find interesting. But again, I zone out on it when I get really into my work, and often miss stuff so I have to rewind...

I'm often in the mood for talk radio. NPR has a good variety of stories, but I also like to mix it up with propaganda... I listen to the clowns on both the Right and Left, depending on what mood I'm in. Problem with that is, I spend time "fact-checking" things that don't sound right to me. (Guess which side gets more stuff wrong... makes crap up out of thin air in fact.)

Most of the time then, lately, I spend just listening to nothing at all. The sounds of the birds and neighborhood goings on outside my window. Occasionally I get bored and want to listen to something, but nothing is good, too.

On that note, I never understood how joggers, bikers and especially hikers can go around with earbuds all the time. When I'm out walking the neighborhood or hiking in a natural place, I want to hear the sounds of where I'm at. I can understand wanting to drown out the sounds of a noisy shop or the crappy pop music they play at the gym, or the droning of a drive in the car, but I like the sounds of the city and especially the sounds of nature.

Well, I gave it a shot...but got distracted with work so much that I moved way into the work mode and I just didn't bother. I finished two jobs during my all nighter that started around 12:00 or so and then stayed up to watch the whole movie till 7:30am.

Rango was pretty funny. I reccomend it to all adults. I hate when they put cuss words in what shod be clear was intended for kids...but want to make it edgy enough for adults.  It was pretty peppered with some mid level swear words. Probably nothing Grandpa hasn't said but kind of odd to see the " cartoon world" becoming PG13  It was rated for PG ....but by most of our older standards, it was really PG 13 and by today's standards that allows a great deal.

SBrems story reminds me of my new pet peeve. People in the service industry on cell phones or texting while on the clock out in public, sweeping, mopping, filling the napkin tray all while on the phone. It's the lack of attention to "the service" you are doing that bothers me. Im sure shop owners have become just a little numb to seeing an employee texting while working. Stopping for a brief 15 seconds to send a message. It's disrespectful. Same thing at business meetings. Hold all calls and text until after the meeting.

Yeah, the smurfs looked like it had some dicey language in it for kids.  I get sick of that crap.  That is why we took our daughter to Winnie the Pooh for her first movie.  She LOVED it.  And I didn't have to worry about words like crap, stupid, butt, etc.  To me, those words don't belong in kids movies.

That would be the side that an individual personally prefers the least. That's who does more. People find their own "facts" that they are satisfied with. The people get the "facts" from the "source' they prefer as well and thus consider that information from that preferred source as "fact".  Besides, no matter what side probes your back more often, your still getting probed. We don't have one side that probes better than the other.  Don't draw me in to a political debate. I'm hitting this one once...and running. Ha!  I prefer to not believe either side anymore no matter who's coating it.

DANS RUNNING...not looking back.

I have to agree with Dan on that one.  And still trying to avoid a political debate.  A lot of it has to do with what YOUR personal beliefs are.

I have talk radio on most of the time.  More for noise, but I catch things every once and a while.  I drives the younger generation nuts to not have music on.

That is true, sometimes I will be working in the shop and realize an hour or two later that the radio is off.  I usually don't bother turning it on at that point since I wasn't missing it anyway.

Cartoons now are way over the top from what I use to watch back in the days...adult swim has some pretty rough stuff besides the american dad, boondocks etc.

I hate when they ruin kids' stories with smut too. The Cat in the Hat did that in the trailers, and my wife and I said, WTF? on cue. However, check out The Fantastic Mr. Fox. Every time they swear they use the word "cuss" in the offending expletive's place. Good movie too. But I won't watch it at work...
