American Apparel selling at Sam's Club
« on: February 09, 2014, 06:10:37 PM »
This was a little of a surprise. They have a bunch of 1 and 2 color designs mostly flags and American motorcycle designs. Real generic designs.

What surprised me more than the shirts being in Sam's Club is the price. All other shirts in the store are more than that.

I was kind of thinking the same thing. Plus what kind of money did the printer make on that one? Getting squeezed my WalMart AND American Apparel?! I'll pass.

While they are AA shirts, it might not be AA that is the vendor.... might be a screen printer.... or end of line stuff from a wholesaler...

I'm pretty sure it has to be AA if that display and branding is being used, not sure though.

AA has been liquidating stock from their flailing retail stores for awhile. Could be why the price is so low. A discount off case on the 2001 would allow us to print something like that at higher volume, make our standard rates on the print and still leave enough for someone to make keystone at that price if we sold them direct to the seller.

But my guess would be AA contracted someone to print up a pile of overstock and sought out a retailer with high volume and lower margin to offload it onto.

I think their ts could do real well in a setting like this but what a 180 from the norm.

No matter the reason, you now have a supplier competing with printers for the same business.  Some of AA's customers would be in this store and others.

It's been a while since I've bought a retail graphic tee, but the price seems pretty low no matter the blank.

I was there this weekend and I think I saw printed shirts for around $5 each...with pretty decent prints.

Walmart is selling something American Made? That is a 180...

AA used to have a link on their site to recommend a screen printing company for those that were looking.
Wouldn't be surprised if they are on both sides of the coin, like many garment mills.

AA has actually given us recommendations if clients call trying to work direct with them.  Maybe the only decent thing they've ever done for us.

I just saw a commercial where Walmart is marketing the fact they are trying to bring manufacturing jobs back to the USA. If it is true they are the one retailer that could make a start of it. Who knows what to believe. I have tried as hard as possible to get away from bib box store shopping. Sometimes it cost more but I am a little guy trying to help other little guys.

Walmart screwed over many small U.S. manufacturers.  Worse, they set a standard where they come in, tell you the terms you'll deal with and then, if you're lucky, you get to fulfill the order and get paid under those terms.  If you're not, the PO is pulled and you potentially crumble.  Home Depot and other box stores followed suit.  I've seen this in action many years ago in a previously life and it's just plain wrong.  Ironic they are now marketing this.

Still, it would be good to see a little mfg come back to the states.  We've nearly forgotten how to make things it seems.
