best way to clean a newman roller frame?
« on: February 04, 2014, 06:12:30 AM »
I have a couple or newman roller frames...and the frames themselves need to be cleaned from tape residue and lint.....I was thinking of dipping them in mineral spirits and let then soak for a while...then abrasive brush them down..then hit them with a pressure washer.

Would this work or should i used something other than mineral spirits?

We use mineral spirit as well for tape residue, and water for non-waterbased emulsion.

The last batch of nasty used roller frames I bought (and it'll be the last batch I buy sight unseen) I used Franmar's gel haze remover, scrub brushes and scotchbrite pads to clean the mess off.

There are all kinds of solvent and goo cleaners out there we use lacquer thinner but that bight be a little strong if you do not like hot chemicals.
After that you will find a SOS soap pad kicks butt and will leave the metal even the powder coated ones just fine.

Easiway 110 and a 3M scrub pad works wonders!

with proper precautions, screen opener will remove just about anything!

Screen opener with a wire brush, 3 minutes then the pressure washer and you've got pristine used roller frames.  I've even used a chisel to scrape the goo off but the powder coat/paint comes off if you're not careful but it really doesn't matter if the frame is blue or pink or purple.  Just make sure the mesh will load easily and there are no knicks or burrs touching the mesh and it's as good as a brand new roller.

I've tried a number of things, even including something that someone posted here and I ordered online.

But, the simplest, easiest, and available at every hardware store...........Lacquer Thinner.

Hotter than Mineral spirits and Turpentine and not as hazardous as the stuff I got online.

We just finished cleaning of 20 frames last week. I thought the screen opener was the best thing we had used for cleaning.  There was a slight side effect, whoever was cleaning would end up coming upstairs high...
Then someone recommended we try that Easiway 110, MAN! That stuff is the cats pajamas! Smells like oranges a bit. The Easiway stuff does make you get high the old fashion way though...O0

It says ure limonene. Soak it in this and any/all adhesives will be gone. Want to make your press completely free of old spray tack? This is the stuff.

The shop will smell strongly of oranges but no one will get high.

Screen opener and a brass wire wheel, then figured out wire wheel was all I needed then I figured out roller frames for 12 bucks cost 15 more to clean lol
