Shur Loc Panels
« on: December 18, 2013, 05:47:47 PM »
Man i cannot seem to get a break with shur loc panels. David over at shur loc has always been super helpful, but for some reason, whenever i order panels from them, 50% of them rip before even going to press.

Does anyone else have this issue? I'm working with David on figuring out what is going on. Typically all our panels whether they are for our 23x31, 23x26, or 43x36 frames always rip in the same places. from panel to panel and from screen to screen.

No such problem, 23x31 econ panels 83-305mesh on roller frames all tensioned btw 25-35N app. 150 in rotation now.  Had an issue with the strips coming apart but Shur-loc rectified that and replaced the panels.  Shur-loc has been a really nice and easy company to work with.

I've never had a problem, but I use EZ frames and not rollers. Do the edges have any nics or burrs or anything that might cause them to rip? What about stretching them inconsistently, like doing too much 1 way before stretching the other way? Other than that, I got nothing.

all screens are sanded and cleaned before panels go on to ensure there aren't any burrs or nicks.

rollers seem to turn all the same amount. no jumps that i can tell.

I've only ever dealt with David @ Shurloc, and he has been nothing but helpful. But man this is super frustrating. We started the year off with about 110 panels from Newman, and at first stretch, only 4 or 5 broke. We threw in some shurloc panels, and right away they started ripping on first tension, or right after first degrease.

Just today, i did 3 86 panels, in a 23x26 frame, and all three panels ripped the same way in the same screen. at first i thought there was maybe a burr or a nic that i missed, but on the second panel, the mesh just ripped right from the panel

Can you post a pic of a busted screen so I can see exactly where the failure is?  Depending on which direction and location you can deduct some causes.  When my guys bring me a busted screen I can tell if it was a stretching failure or a mishandling problem.  Maybe it will be identical to the ones I've had fail and I can help you guys figure it out.  Do you think your tension meter is accurate?

these were ripping even before i could put my tension meter on it. My air pressure setting for my clamps on my stretching table were super low as well, at a little bit more than 20 psi

to me it looks like its rolled over too much. I've stretched smaller newmans with panels and I thought the plastic almost lied flat to the surface. I don't remember having it turned over that far, but it has been a while since I stretched one

I went and checked a few that I had and mine are definitely not rolled over that far.

What type press, does have side holders that may have something that could do that? Or feel the frames see if their is ruff spots and metal sand paper them if so.

So it's not a corner softening issue and I don't think it's a "too high of tension" issue with the corners like I was expecting.  It does look like the rollers are rolled a little more than ours but shurloc has always had their panels cut really on point so you didn't have to over-roll the roller.  Is that how far most of your rollers turn?  What about compared to bolt mesh in regards to the roller turn?

well the rollers once they popped, extended a little bit more than they normally do, so no our rollers aren't normally turned that far out.

We use i believe it's a standard newman table.

One thing i did find a bit surprising on these, is the top portion of the panel was actually longer than the top groove. which i've never encountered that in the past.

again, no nicks or burrs on the side or in the channel.

also as mentioned in another post, the mesh at the bottom to mid left side of the panel, ripped right from the strip at the end. clean.

I don't use em, just raw mesh, but will toss this out.

Any chance the roller frames are a bit bigger than the panel are supposed to fit in?

That would cause them to have more stress in the corners, the weakest point.
