how do you tape up your screens?
« on: May 08, 2013, 12:08:28 PM »
I looked on the forum, but found a bunch of posts that just delve off into who likes what tape, etc...

i'm wondering how you tape up your frames (in our case newmans), for the auto and manual, as well as if you tape different for waterbased inks vs. plastisol

In my case I only tape on the inside, one down each side longer than the print area. And one across the end. The only reason I tape on one end is for when we wash ink out of the screen that one piece of tape keeps chems and ink from getting into the corner of the frame and mesh. If printing on youth or sleeve palettes we always tape on the bottom along the side of where the palettes will be, sometimes the emulsion can wear through along those edges.

I tape both sides because it never fails on long runs ink will always find its way through the screen and onto the shirt.  I did realize this weekend when removing the tape for screen claiming that I need to pay more attention to how I put the tape on. It is sometimes taking too much time to get it off due to the way I over lap the tape.

we tape one side only here is a quick video I made for someone some time ago...dollar store tape rules and the price is right!
A post script to this is we purchased a 20 inch wide scoop coater and cut it down to fit within an inch or so of our Newmans so the emulsion pretty much covers the entire screen and one shot of tape is more than enough.
here is the stupid video.

Moose,

Do you not have any adhesive left on the screen?  The cheap tapes I have used ALWAYS left some adhesive...a ROYAL pain. I use natural rubber adhesives because they don't leave much of a trace, but they               are a bit more spendy.

I'd try some of what you use however, if you could more PRECISELY identify it.  Do you mean Dollar General? Is there a marking in the core of these tapes?  I'm always looking for cheaper alternatives, but I can't have adhesive residue.

Odd that was an issue with the javelin for obvious reasons. But once switching to a chopper style press I never have the emulsion break down, only on smaller palettes does this happen.

hey Stan,
Absolutely no adhesive remains at all with the so called  "DUCT TAPE" which is not at all like the duct tape you are thinking of. I have attached a pic below of brand name i have used in the past, see pic.

I hit the dollar stores here (there are 3 ) always looking for tape and the like for the business.
The one store I like best called "the dollar store" is pretty much a get what you find store...i love it, on any given day you can find ANYTHING selling for a buck or less.
The guys who run it buy seconds, loss leaders and just plain stuff , junk and crap and throw it in the store for a buck.
The specific tape I have at the moment is no name currently but other times they are branded. I usually buy a couple of rolls i think will be OK try them out and if good go back and buy the whole freaking load. The crappy stuff i use to close boxes etc.

You might touch base with  Screenexpress (Wayne from the boards here) who asked the same question some time ago and was the reason for the video i sent you. I believe he actually contacted thsi manufacturer and bought some tape? you might ask him  how he made out

Hope this helps...
