Any info on an older MSP 3140
« on: January 21, 2013, 04:51:42 PM »
Looking at an older Nuarc MSP 3140.

How much have they changed as far as technology over the years. Is there a year that someone could tell me that I would be safe with as far as not going to much backwards from a new? I know it wouldn't be the same as if I bought a new one..just don't want to make a mistake and go backwards.

The unit that I'm looking at has the older style controls with buttons if that helps...the body looks the same. I'm waiting for a serial # from the seller still and a year made as well. Just want to prepare myself in advance.

I guess the main thing I'm after is (could I expect great results from an older unit as I would from a newer one) but without all the bells and whistles.  Assuming I have a new bulb of course.  1200 watts old style...1200 watts new style.

Jon

I have the older version with buttons, and i love it. It was such a big improvement from the old National exposure unit I used to use.

Rmonks,

Thanks for the reply.

I'll be going from a olec 1k metal halide workhorse to this and I know the new ones will be a step up...just want to make sure an older one would be a step up too.

On your unit with buttons.  Are you still able to program certain light units ect...so we could just hit a button depending on which screen is being used?  Does it do the vacuum/expose in 1 click of the button when the vacuum reaches a certain pressure?  Any other things about the old style that make your life easier that you would be willing to share?

I have the older four post style (buttons as well)... it has tens of settings to program (maybe 50, maybe 100... more than I will need for sure!).

WAY better than my DIY metal halide grow light setup I had before... I can't seem to under expose a stencil in this thing!  Hands down my favorite piece of gear in the shop... well, maybe my auto base flash, can't over look the brain dead simple operation of that!

I once had the old one and now have the new one, I MUCH prefer the old style because of the blanket.  When it breaks on the old ones you can change it out in 10 minutes.  When it breaks on the new one, IT SUX TO CHANGE IT AND IT TAKES A WHOLE DAY!

Jon,
I left a lengthy post to your duplicate post over on the M&R forum.  Take a look and if you will contact me with the serial number we can go over the differences.

Thank you Ron.  I sent you a PM over there.  I'll fill in the blanks once I receive word back from seller.

I'm to inpatient to only ask the question once...sorry for the duplicate post.

We bought ours back in 2005. I assume that`s what you mean by older version. It`s a great unit. We change the bulb once a year, apart from that it`s almost maintenance free. Might upgrade to a used tri-light in the next few years though.

The only issue I had was getting it into my exposure room, I had to take it apart. not a big problem.
