discharge on safety green?
« on: November 13, 2012, 04:26:16 PM »
have a customer wanting a print on navy and safety green. Also, wants discharge!
If we use the same inks as on the navy, I would imagine it would cover enough to get a decent print. Anybody try it?
I should mention she thinks she can get safety green (or something close to it) in 100% cotton (for what ever that's worth as who knows what kind of dye would they use).

Gildan safety green discharges to white okay.  It reeeally hurts your eyes trying to read white on safety green.

I would plan to overprint plastisol or wb on the safety green.  I think it will discharge, but not enough and not consistently enough. But that's based off AA not Gildan.

I have not seen Safety green in anything but 50/50.  That color is so light you should be able to print them fine with out the discharge. (unless your doing a discharge white)

Best thing you can do is get a couple and test it Pierre. Here is a pic of something I just tested 5 mins ago. Discharge red on a 50/50 kelly green heather. Looks pretty promising to me.... ;D I have some safety green out there and I will test it real quick on that to see what it does.

Here is safety green and safety orange. The camera is not showing the true colors due to the brightness of the shirt. The red between the kelly heather in the post above is pretty damn close to the way it just turned out on the two safety colors. The safety orange is the worst out of the three.

What color ink are you discharging?

navy and safety green with a sim process print. The truck would be B&W (white, gray & black).
I think it might actually work. We would need another screen to switch the text to navy on the saftey green shirts.

Am I being too brave for even considering this?

I think you're ok, from looking at those colors- they are a mix of greyscale and a muted brown and red, hard to goof on that regardless of substrate.  The text is the only thing that might need backup if it was white on Safety Green but you said you are switching the text to Navy so there's that problem solved.

I know that we run different screen coats for plastisol v. wb on counts 180 and lower but it's all the same on 225 up so, worst possible case, you swap out to plastisol and carry on.  Just as long as the client is cool with it being soft hand plastisol on safety green v. dc I wouldn't be too scared of it.

I suppose the safest bet would be to do it as a dc ub with top plastisol on both colors. The hand would still be very soft and the print relatively breathable.   But I'm talking out my arse as I haven't top hit plastisol over a dc ub yet, it's just what I would do for security on this one.

I think the UB route is the way to go. More predictable. . . I told the customer we'd probably run regular plastisol (we would use the DC ubase though) just to be on the safe side. Even then we might be in for a surprise with the truck.

Thanx for all the suggestions and feedback. It helped  sort it out in my head!

This design will need special screens to go on light and dark shirts. That truck will have to have a light shirt version and a dark shirt version. Unless your printing the black and white in the design. If not your highlights and shadows will be reversed.

 Am I wrong....

Sorry Just read your post again about printing white grey and black on the truck...

I am sure that you will make it work no matter what. DC base would be a good way to go as well.

This is going to be one that we are going to do with a DC underbase. We may even try the whole thing as discharge if the customer will let us. This was one reason why I was looking at your dot... ;D

Depending on the customers expectations you may need to adjust fims/screens and inks if you're going for a dead nuts match from black to green. I would DB the base plastisol on top unless it was a ginormous project.
