not unless you want to print halftones

you don't need one, but it does make your life a little easier and your films a little darker.

If you are going to print halftones (gradients), you will need to find a workaround for it or figure out how to use GhostScript.

If you are printing from Illy, and you do not want to manually separate, you would need the RIP (I do not know if 1400 is post script printer)

HP used to make one they marketed as supporting PS level 3--but it was just a software emulation package from Adobe.

I still do my CMYK seps and halftoning in PS--Although I'm saving my pennies for a RIP, it's also kinda convenient having the file saved exactly as it was printed.

I don't think so. If there were, it would probably be for color work, not what we usually need.

Still struggling with this printer. I downloaded the driver from Epson and installed it but when I go to do seps. the only option it gives me is the (Composite) selection and not the separation option. What am I missing?

I have an Epson 1400 and, as far as I know, if you are not using a rip you have to manually separate and print. In other words make a file for each color and print your film. With accurip (and I assume others) you can choose separations and just click on the spot color you created and print that colors film. I hope that makes sense.

As Shanarcy said, "separations" is only enabled when you have a RIP.

The 1400 driver has that. Its the first or second tab if I get time tonight I will do some screen shots. I do most my stuff with no rip (other than standard Epson that came with machine )

No. My girls do simple seps in Corel.
But we have rip and it works easier and better on our 1400 which has all black.

If you are using Corl X3 or higher you should look into Simple Seps from Advanced Artist   http://www.advancedartist.com/  .
Seps and halftones are really easy program is  $150.00 and worth every penny
