How to best calculate cost for equipment sale
« on: January 10, 2021, 10:20:20 PM »
Hey all!

My time has come to bow out of the print industry. I have a small manual shop, mostly Vastex machines purchased new in 2015, and a good friend who was working with me in the shop will be carrying on in a new location. I want to price everything out for him and I don't want to overcharge him or undercharge for that matter.

What're the best/easiest calculations for used equipment costs? I bought it all new in 2015 and everything is in great shape. Would be a certain percentage based on 5-6 years of use?

The main pieces I am selling are:

Vastex 2000 6/4
Vastex Exposit 4731
Vastex EconoRed II 30"

Thanks for any advice you can give and if this is the wrong category to post this, please accept my apologies and either move it or let me know and I will be happy to repost it in the proper forum.

Thank you!
Lenny

The fine folks at M&R emailed me once a depreciation list for their equipment. Now that`s already a couple of years ago and I can`t really remember if that was based just on their Automatic printing presses or if that list was meant to cover all of their equipment. Let me see if I can still find it in my emails.

Sorry cannot find that list anylonger. But if I remember it right my press had lost 60% of it`s value after 7 years in service.

start with the going prices on eBay, craigslist, and digit smith to get a feel for going prices. On eBay, particularly the sold listings.

One thing I have noticed watching eBay, craiglist etc for many years that used screen printing equipment goes for not much. I have seen many adds of complete shops
start high and sit for months with huge price reductions . Personally I'm not expecting much.

if he was there using the equipment and everything is in top notch shape, probably about 50% off. it should be a good price for both. You could make an argument for 60% (40%discount), but that would highly depend on availability. digitsmith.com is your friend. See what they are going for there and add 10% (extra since he knows the history of the equipment and there are no surprises). On the other hand, many places will be putting up the equipment and the prices will most likely drop this year. . .

Yes, we've won our share of awards, and yes, I've tested stuff and read the scientific papers, but ultimately take everything I say with more than just a grain of salt! So if you are looking for trouble, just do as I say or even better, do something I said years ago!

I would add, the Exposit would probably have the largest depreciation %. Due to its functionality (assuming it is black light  fluorescent)
Having said that.... it could easily be upgraded to a better light source.
