Printing gradients on 10-12oz Totes?

We print quite a few totes, typically solid art and we run a thick white or clear base prior to printing to prevent (lessen) issues with the knit from the material.  We get a lot of requests for a heavier weight cotton knit that really doesnt print that great, but we make it work on these simple designs.

Now, we need to print a halftone fade into the bag material, and I am concerned about knit interference making the gradient halftones look like crap.  Anyone have a trick to printing on these guys that doesnt involve just saturating the whole bag with a thick clear base?

we cut the ink down a lot, and use lowest mesh we can get away with. But some tote weaves like 11 ounce are just too course, depends on the brand.

yea, seems like "too coarse" may just be the answer...

Redesign the art with a larger halftone that looks and fits the tote instead of your traditional small halftones
