scotchguard protected poly/lycra blend inks?
« on: January 02, 2014, 10:41:10 AM »
AAARRGHHHH,

so we took an order to print on the poly/lycra jerseys that are coated with Scotchguard (did not know that part when we took the order). We tested it with silicone ink and it was not sticking.

My thinking is going with poly ink and stretch additive, but that will reduce the bleed resistance and some of the garments are red! I am trying to figure out now what to do.

Any suggestions???

pierre
Yes, we've won our share of awards, and yes, I've tested stuff and read the scientific papers, but ultimately take everything I say with more than just a grain of salt! So if you are looking for trouble, just do as I say or even better, do something I said years ago!

P, would nylobond work? Same as a waterproofing is scotchguard in basic form or an additive of the same for the inks being used? Just a thought.

that was my thinking, but nylonbond reduces the bleed resistance and these are 85% poly in black and red color; both tending to bleed like crazy. My fear is that adding NB will make them bleed and the jerseys are $40 each (@ 300 pieces, thats a $12k exposure).

Adding any bonding additive also reduces it's stretch characteristics :(

P, do a test with up to 10% stretch additive and see what happens.  It may be just fine..... I do hate to gamble on $12k worth of clothing though.

Definitely check out the "Performance" inks available to you.  They do stretch and cure at a lower temp.

Have you talked to someone at the manufacturer's?

When Under Armor burst upon the scene, they almost immediately had guidelines and suggested inks for decorators.

Worst they can tell you is that they don't intend their garments to be printed, and the shipping and 15% restocking fee could be cheap considering the alternative.
That rug really tied the room together, did it not?

Might be better if I saw the image being printed before I comment.

white text in Impact font with a thin red or black border.

waiting on some info from Wilflex.

Thanx Colin, Union also thinks we should be OK without nylonbond.

We'll test on the one extra piece we have.

HD clear is an excellent stretch additive. Try 5% in the UB and top white

i just had a similar job. 250 jerseys. half of them red (nylon/spandex) and the other half black (poly/spandex). printed the red ones with performance white mixed with nylobond and stretch additive. i was skeptical but it worked out well and wash/stretch tests held up. printed the black ones with performance and stretch additive. no bleed and stretched well.

i know i got the better end of the deal that the black ones were poly rather than the red ones....

now we have to name and number all of them, front and back... fun stuff.
