Discharge grey on black tees

How would I approach this. I have black tees and the print is going to be a mid tone grey. Would I use white discharge base and ad some black pigments, it`s all CCI discharge or would I rather go for the clear base ad some white and black pigments or make a mix or clear and white base and ad some black pigments?

Hey, not to sound silly but what pantone does it call for? Say cool gray 6? Just follow the recipe CCI has will work fine. Of course depending on the client maybe water base and not discharge could give that vintage look

Either's fine.  Like some others on here we prefer to use the D-White in place of the CMS White pigment for white heavy mixes due to the threat of the dreaded pigment chunks but it's all good either way. 

Brandon has a point too- always better to skip the ZFS when you can.  Just proceed with caution I guess now that CCI officially denounced using the D-Base unactivated on here.  Mix with W-Base or similar if not activating.

We generally just use D-White with black pigment and a touch of Blue 072.
You should consider trying an 80/20 mix of D-White/D-Base too.

Cool. Will try that first as we are a little low on the white base.

Careful here.  I love the tonal/low activator approach but let me show you where this road can lead. Dye lot variance is a bitch.  We now approach this differently and use fully pigmented and activated inks to get the desired tone and keep it consistent. Unless you know you have a singular dye lot (not likely) I would avoid this technique where consistency is needed.  Took us quite a few thousand shirts to finally figure that out.

We have done lots of tonal discharge recently and that is for sure one option I will not use for this job. The pantone color we are after is cool grey 8 and I think I might try to go with white base some black and whatever else is required to achieve that particular pantone color. Even though the customer does not care too much about an exact match anyway.

We recently did some shirts with this sort of effect on navy.  We used straight clear base with barely any, like one or two drops, of blue pigment just to cut the vibrancy and tone, to give an offwhite/offblue look.  I think you could reasonable use clear base with a few drops of black to give the desired effect.
