Don't forget to shut it down if the power stays off too long.

Mine have a count down on them and when it's out for too long I start watching it and kill my server if it looks like it won't make it.

My UPS included software that saved files being currently worked upon and automatically shut things down properly.

On a related note, a friend just fried something or other on her computer, and it was apparently due to, or at least reportedly helped by her old wiring, and circuits being overtaxed.
The folks who built her new one, suggested (insisted) she also get a UPS. When it was plugged in, a red light illuminated, apparently indicating that her wiring is funky!

I am assuming that it is detecting that there is not enough current.

Yeah, I don't like extra software running on my systems but I can see how others would want this insurance.

I've also had defective UPS (got one in my shop right now)... right out the box didn't work... but sounds like she had issues.  Anyone with power issues like that I recommend a UPS with "AVR" Auto Voltage Regulation.  It will take like 90v to 140v and smooth it out to 120v... that's what I insist upon for the off shore platforms because generator power is so dirty.  IF they hook them up and don't just use them for a foot rest it has helped a LOT.

if its the red light on the back:
could be open ground, or reversed polarity...  i have a ups that showed the same red light, but it was because it was plugged into a non grounded outlet.

I got two new back up power units sitting at home, might need to hook those babies up one day, as much bad weather as we get here.
