Need advice on heather grey scorching AGAIN!
« on: April 18, 2012, 11:50:46 AM »
Last time it was the quartz flashes. Now its the dam dryers. I am running the dryers(electric) at 850, belt speed 18. They print are just hitting 320 towards the end of the chamber (temp measured with atkins donut probe)  They are 70% cotton/30% poly. I am at my whits end over here.

Are your shirts lying flat?  I have had to adjust both my temps, and belt speeds downwards, so that the areas that are not lying completely flat don't scorch.  Think of Mountaintops being closer to the sun getting more light.

Just my solution. There might be other, better ones.

But I started doing this when I discovered my discharge jobs cured more evenly in my electric dryer which is waaaay marginal for discharge. Lay 'em flat, less heat, more dwell...and shoot 'em right under the last heating element to verify temp.  Not as slick or accurate as the Atkins donut probe, but I don't have one yet. I do have a washing maching and a dryer in the shop and we do LOTS of wash-testing, especially for discharge jobs.

Thank you Stan. I will try what you suggested. I hope it works because these are our branded shirts. Picking another shirt is not an option for me.

I have noticed ash grey scorching when too hot , but like the mountain theory my take on that is the air space under the shirt causing problems.  I'm not sure if you have rectangular platens or the style with a neck shape . I used to notice on our Hix presses that ash and some blends would scorch in the area off the platen not where the shirt is on the platen. That part of the shirt was actually further away from the spot dryer. ?

Last week it was on the Canvas 3001 Dark Heather, but not their Ash, go figure. We received the reorder for another 1000 too, so we told them they needed an additional 100 if we hope to meet the 1000 amount. Over 70 rejects on the last run. Speed the dryer up a tiny bit at a time? Or maybe a low cure additvie or ink? Such a pain...

What we discussed on the phone plus I was thinking about the moisture content of these goods.  Do they seem drier than normal?

We run gas, and had to speed up the belt considerably...

I will say something is up with the heathers we are also scorching heathers in specific spots that is on a flat platen nothing to do with wrinkles or laying flat. We never had thisroblem till about a year ago then it started happening on some batches and not on others. Just like steve we had a decent amount of rejects because of this. It makes me wonder if they are using some type of inferior synthetic in the blend but who knows just a thought.

raise your ir panels. you may have to slow your belt down slightly but i think your panels are to close to the shirts. you can still get a full cure but with higher panels you may need a little more retention time. sounds like you have tryed all else.

yep, even fans at the back of the dryer blowing toward the dryer exit can do it with gas.

Yep they are on electric dryers. This doesn't happen on the gas dryer.

They don't seem dryer than any of our other shirts. After looking closer last night I think one of the panel relays in the dryer isn't working and the bearing in the exhaust fan went. For now I have moved all of the orders to the gas dryer. Going to repair the electric and try the idea you gave me. Hoping that sorts it out.

Well the relay fix didn't change anything. I just moved all the jobs to the gas dryers
