Some biz friends of mine are going through some growing pains. They are moving into a new bldg. Which is probably wise since they they just bought.........
six autos. This is going to be interesting as they are great folks but totally disorganised. I've privately counseled them on what to expect as, at this point in the acquisition, everyone is walking on eggshells.

My boss always told me you either want to be a really big business or a really small one. Those medium size shops tend to hurt more in terms of cash flow, from what I've heard. I think I have my sights on being a smaller business, but I'm a simpleton.

No you don't.. be glad you're what you are.

When you pass 4 machines, you become a factory and the game changes completely.
I've run small shops and big shops. I much prefer the smaller mid size shops.

The largest my company will ever get is a nice manual, 2 autos and a 12 head emb machine. It's more than enough to take on even the largest custom retail order and the occassional 20k-50k pc contract runs.

An update. We get a call from these folks this am.
"I'm from comoany XYZ. I'm looking at your website and can't see an address; where are you located?"
"We don't have a website."
"Oh; well we are looking for companies to screenprint our garments; is that something you do?"
"We have been printing for you since the Nineties"
"Oh, OK well thank You"

Later.........
"I'm trying to find an order #1234. Did we give that to you?"
"We shipped it two weeks ago and e-mailed you the packing slip, BOL, and tracking info."
"OH......thanks!"

And later yet.......
"We have a hot rush for today. Some pants, waistbands and sportsbras. If I courier it to you now can you get it out today?"
So I call back to explain rush fees.
"Well the art is not approved and the garments have not been pulled so I can't get everything to you till 3:00 at the earliest"

This is a typical day between the two of us. Dozens of e-mails/calls each day like this.
And those five autos are on there way!

Sometimes its not all about the money...I got into this business at one time wanting to make all the money in the world, after a few years I just enjoy making a good living.   Feeding a monster comes with to many headaches for me anyway, some people love it  SAM!!! he is all about the biz, me I just like to do a little art and print.
