Screen count vs job count?
« on: August 08, 2016, 06:30:14 PM »
Curious at how many screens you keep in inventory vs how many jobs you do or how many screens you go through in a week or month.

I know we are SUPER low but I'm curious at where we should be at if we were keeping it up like we should be.

I think the rule of thumb is 3-4 days of screens

1 day of 'reclaim' screens
1 day of 'coated and waiting' screens
1 day of 'imaging' screens
1 day of 'to-print' screens

we do about 20-30 screens/day during the busy season...  and have around 80 or so 'good' screens in the shop.  (the rest are special use, archive, etc)

Ideally I'd like to have at least three and probably four day's worth. Reality is I'm only at three but want to build it before next busy season. Have about 650  screens right now

My ideal would be to have 3 days out of screens ready to print at all times.  Reclaim, coating, drying, imaging, resolving, taping/staging, should all be geared to keep up with that.  However, we are low screen count/high screen turnaround here.  We manage to keep screens prepped a few days out but it can be a struggle and requires some creativity.

Consolidation is the key, especially with a small screen library.  If you have too much variety in mesh counts and coating types you'll always struggle to have what you need.

At this moment we need 133 screens to complete active orders.  We have a library of ≈130 screens, I'm actually not sure of the exact count.
Out of that 133, 95% fall across 2 mesh counts.  This is a big part of how we get by with a tiny set of screens, look at your mesh counts and coating and see what you can eliminate.

A much easier solution is a larger library and more space to store them.  I'd love to have a few hundred at the least, it would eliminate a lot of management.

My point is, if yer library is a little slim, you can get by.  Minimize/simplify mesh selection, turn screens around quickly and efficiently, manage for the days/weeks ahead v. further out.  Not ideal but you can make it work.

I only have about 30 screens right now. I try to reclaim at least 8 on Saturday or Sunday to have ready for the week. Then I usually add a reclaim day by Wednesday. I obviously do not do the volume or color counts as many printers on here, but it has been working well so far. I also stick to my main 2 mesh counts (150-S and 180-S) But I'm going to add a few more 225-S.

I'd like to get up to around 50 screens, most being 150-S and 180-S. I still use statics currently, which I'd like to change eventually. But I started getting the s-threads with permanent blockout from Spot Color Supply and they have been fantastic. I love not taping the screens and they are the tightest statics I've ever used, so if they hold up that'll be my answer for a while.

We rotate around 400 between manual and auto, the screen guy usually reviews the next two days and gets inventory ready based on that. Years ago we would just blast and coat, and still have the wrong frames or mesh, so the review made the most sense.

If you have screens ready to print sitting in a rack for 2-3 days, you're doing it right.

burning a screen to go on the press in 30 minutes.. now you're doing it wrong.

3 days out is the ideal situation
