Scented oils or scratch and sniff ink.
« on: December 15, 2015, 01:25:32 PM »
I have searched the forum. I am aware of the Durascent product.

We have spoken to Durascent but in the meantime I am wondering if anyone has tried adding something like this to an ink:

http://www.naturesgardencandles.com/candlemaking-soap-supplies/category/0204/fragrance-oils-c.html?&r=566fd9ec

I only need the strikeoff to be scented it won't be washed. This should be enough for our design team to determine if it is work pursuing. Can I add scented oil to a solvent based ink without it ruining the shirt or the rest of the print?

IF anyone has experience with this, how much did you add?, Did you add it to a clear overprint or into the underlay?

Any production notes you can give me would be great.

Thanks everyone.

I'm willing to bet that this is uncharted territory for most of us here.

But I'll "bump it" for you. Somebody might just know, but hasn't seen it yet.

The little vials of scented oil are 3 bucks a piece.

I am probably going to suck it up and buy the flavors they want to try out, put some in a gel for overprint and some in the underlay and see what happens.

We had Patrick from Durascent up for a presentation a couple of years ago, fascinating stuff. Developing and deploying a scent can get really complicated though as everyone's interpretation and emotions connected to a smell can vary widely.

For example, to you the smell of rose perfume might mean a beautiful girlfriend you had once, to me it's my grandmother's dusty closet. A lot more involved than deciding where to put the puff or the HD. That is exactly what stopped us last time.

I know it doesn't answer your question, but we've printed a fair amount of scented shirts for a baseball team we work with. You'd be amazed how many people buy bacon scented shirts. We bought from Durascent also. The key was a nice thick ink layer (I believe we were at 200 micron) and getting the thickness in one pass, no print flash print. Our customers, and theirs, loved them.  :o  We did poly bag these and always ran last thing Fridays. We hope to do an apple scent for another customer, although they want the scent to fill their store. All that, and still no help to you

interesting stuff, never really thought of this but it brings huge possibilities.
One thought I initally had was how do they keep the fragrence from vaping off during cure/ We often print on shirts that our female customers size sample first and you sure can smell the perfume they wear / wore  jumping out of the shirt when the shirt is in the drier.
By the way I always thought printed tee shirts smelled like MONEY ;D

We have added(up to 4%) essential oils or whatever the concentrated scents are to DC ink to combat the printed smell. Works for printing, through the dryer, and about 30 min after, but then it's gone and you are back to square 1...
