HELP! Epson 4880 Error Code
« on: April 20, 2015, 07:11:13 PM »
My 4880 is throwing a service Error code 00010035.  Is anyone out there who could help me through some troubleshooting tonight?  We're seriously stuck between a rock and hard place, I would be extremely grateful.

This is from memory as Im not staring at a epson right now but....

From front of printer, remove right cover, there is a sensor that reads the position of a gear that drives the pump, basically telling the printer where the start of the pump cycle is. Mechanically the gear can get stripped, junk can get in there, it can get jammed, or the sensor can get out of position. Electically the sensor can die, the wiring can fail, or the main board can go bad. Epson service menu has a test section that will tell you what all the sensors are reading so you can tell if the sensor is behaving and the correct home position is set on sensors that need it, IE carriage position. Can't recall if there is a reading for the pump gear sensor though, and it might be one of the sensors that stops you from even getting into the service menu.

We have a huge day tomorrow but if I remember I'll try and take a picture of the parts in question. I know it can seem tough but epsons really are very simple once you get inside their head so to speak. And I hate seeing perfectly fine machines go to the landfill for want of a minor adjustment or part. I can only imagine the mountain of old cell phones and keyboards that must exist somewhere.

It never hurts to have two of everything in this industry.

I really appreciate the input!  The last thing I want to do is throw this thing away, there has to be a fix.

Okay there is a self test for the pump sensor.

Hold left/down/up and turn printer on.

Self Testing
Push right button
Test
Right Button
Down button until it displays Sensor
Right button
Down until you see Pump

This will tell you what the pump sensor is reading. Should be off while printer is going through it's rigamarole.
If it says on at that time you know there's something wrong.

Facing printer remove right cover. From back, reference attached picture to see pump housing, black plastic cover
with orange/brown sensor wires leading into it. Check wires just in case.

Pump housing is removed from top of printer via a couple screws. I don't have the time right now or I'd show ya.
I'd bet that once you have that out the problem will be obvious. I'd wager waste ink all up in the sensor and
gears, which is an easy clean fix. If it's broken or stripped gears or sensor is dead lemme know. You can test
sensor with a piece of metal and view results in the menu referenced above. G'luck!

Turns out a gear had come loose allowing the wiper blade to move freely.  I should have taken a picture, but by the time I realized that the gear was off I just wanted to get the printer back together and tested.  It was interested to dig into the printer and clean out the dry ink.

I did come across a maintenance guide that was really helpful:  http://www.scribd.com/doc/123933335/EPSON-PRO-4400-4450-4800-4880-4880C-SM#scribd

I appreciate the help everyone.
