Shimmer and rhinestones together
« on: February 27, 2015, 10:58:26 AM »
I just got a project that involves printing shimmer and heat applying rhinestones.
The rhinestones will not be applied directly on the shimmer ink, but the transfer paper will be on the top while applying.

Will that make my shimmer stick to the transfer sheet and get pulled off the shirt?
Each tee gets about 10-15 rhinestones. About 20 tees?

Would it be better to apply them one by one, or just go with it normal way?

Hoping someone had experience with this (positive one)

I can't answer your question exactly.  But we do that up front (not me) all the time.  Pretty labor intensive, but we always do them one by one with Sobo glue, I believe.

It works. and we make 'em pay....

It's a "labor of love" so make sure you don't have a Type A Personality sticking those suckers on...who NEEDS do be doing something more important!

I'd have to
     1) surrender my Man Card, and
     2) shoot, club, or strangle a small animal afterward.

What are the heat and time requirements of the rhinestones?
I can add most vinyls, with their relatively low temps and times to existing plastisol just fine, but come up with workarounds whe  adding digital transgers and their higher temps and longer times.
25 seconds at 400 vs. 12 seconds at 300 gives me concern.

330 at 15 seconds. Cold peel.
Reheat again for 5 seconds after transfer paper is removed.

Unless your heat platen has a teflon sheet added (as many do) I'd worry about that second pressing without paper as I have never pressed plastsol without something between the platen and the ink.

Easy to test first though.

I was going to test this weekend. I use teflon sheet, but my concern was a sticky transfer tape that is used to transfer rhinestones to the shirt.
I'm concerned that ink will stick to it. I do not have issue with pressing with teflon on if there was no transfer sheet.

We do this all the time.

We do the print first..then put the rhinestones eagle head where it is supposed to go. Teflon sheet over it / we used to use wax paper..press for the time it says...take off lay over to side, put another shirt under heat press and while that one is cooking we cool peel the other tee..

we do not press again, and have not had any issue of anything falling off. My daughter has 3 of these and we wash them all the time.

Note: we press for 10 seconds.. but you do have to be careful, dont let it go longer because the teflon will lift the ink up...

This is what I have.
Lets hope it will work. Like I said, I have no issues with teflon sticking. I'm afraid of transfer tape sticking.

transfer tape from the rhinestones?  The tape from the eagle head overlaps the circle its in and it does not come off.

I have not had that problem....

watch next time i'll have issues..haha!

Update.
Tried it over the weekend. No issues whatsoever :)

Whitewater, yes, the transfer tafe. I just did not know how the ink would react when heated and when the transfer tape is on it.

Quick update, worked as a charm with a small hiccup.
The actual print have distorted a bit so I had manually move the outer rhinestones that were supposed to be in the circles.
It took about 15-20 seconds to do that.
