That's is a huge catch and very exciting for anyone. I would like to catch one and release it.

The thing that I find wrong with it is that they didn't eat the shark. They caught it, killed it, dissected it for class and tossed everything back into the water for other fish to feed on.  Jus seems wrong yo catch abd kill something just for class then discard it.

pretty sad, that shark is probably 30-50 years old and to be caught by a kid, cut up and then discarded...sad way to go out. it is a huge blue if that is what it was.

The sad thing about human nature is that sometimes we kill stuff only for fun.

You catch something that big you should put it back. Thats how places get fished out. If you take all the adults the population will fall over time. Catch and release always.

Actually, the average freshwater yield per acre is around 50lbs...so most fisheries can handle it.  This is for smaller lakes and non-stocked fisheries.  Larger lakes can usually handle a little more since they usually get stocked and the DNR monitors fish population by species.

I used to fisha  2 acre lake and was always careful about how much I kept.  Frankly, I love eating fish, so I kept most of what I caught.  Fishing regulations are in place to make sure that adults have a couple of seasons of spawning before they can be kept to ensure the population stays up.

And besides, if there are too many adults, they eat the young, and then you end up with over-population..ever fished a lake where the fish heads seem too large for their bodies?

I keep 'em too.  Never ocean fished though- that's a big 'ol dang 'ol catch there. 

We release native trout here and it's helping out a lot of course.  It's also helping that some of us slay the non-native species every time we go out. They taste pretty good to me.   I just don't understand the "catch and release only" mentality.  Most of the folks who are into this (fly fisherman) work those fish for so long that you might as well keep a lot of 'em.  I'd say that's probably the case with the big shark too. By the time they landed it it was probably seriously weakened and might've just been gobbled up if thrown back anyway.

Ya know Dan.  I used to hunt a fair amount down here in Texas.  I used to feel bad when I shot down a dove and couldn't find it.  Not because I lost a meal, but because something died for nothing....I thought.  Then I had an old hunter open my eyes.  He told me....Everything has to eat.  I just provided some animal with a meal that they would not have normally caught.  Just helping the food chain.

Besides, since a shark whups up on lots of smaller fish during their lifetime meals, it seems kind of fitting for some of them to turn the tables......once in their life.

You all make good points. I guess I was speaking from a point of view from my area. We used to be able to go out and catch a nice days worth of big bass. These days we will catch a nice lunker maybe every 5 trips. It is getting worse every year. A lot of spots are over fished and new rules have been put in place to help bring the population back. I am also aware there are other factors at play too. We have some plant that releases spores into the water here. When the spores hit the water a sort of algae grows and sucks all the oxygen out of the water. Could really ruin the fishing around here if it spreads. We do however keep all flathead catfish as they are invasive and eating a large amount of fish. We also have idiots planting them in different lakes a resevoirs. I am still waiting to catch a snakehead. But the day I do will probably mean the end of smaller fish in our area.

I have never understood why people move species from lake to lake.

The pond I used to fish has HUGE crappie in it.  I would go and fish, catch around 10 or so fish and none of them would be under 1lb.  That isn't healthy either.  Only recently I caught a young'un.  That at least gives me some hope.  The bass in the lake seem to be doing great though, but the sunfish are the same as the crappies, all huge, no small ones.

There are tons of sunfish here. They are all over. We use them to catch catfish, pike, musky. Catch a decent sized sun we throw it in a bucket. When the sun goes down tail hook it, throw a big bobber about 4' up the line and cast it out. Works real well.
