what do i need? all new mac valves?
« on: March 27, 2014, 11:06:10 PM »
Have an issue with heads not chopping. Started with head 1 during a job last week. Switched to head 2. I think that head just had spent its whole life with a flash under it so no go there. Switched to head 3 and now we are back in business. My jobs have all been 2 color so I haven't paid enough attention to the problem this past week. Well today head 7, same thing no chopping and now I have a constant whooshing sound from the mac valve bank. I haven't contacted m&r basically because of a couple reasons that are all my fault and the simple fact that I cannot afford a tech at all. What do yall think?

Drop some air valve oil in the air lines on each one that is bad. then if that helps check the amount of oil in the system. What year and model do you have now?

The oiler is new and functions properly. Where would you put the oil? Down at the mac valve or up at the choppers? I have a 97 Gauntlet 8/10. My supply rep looked at the press when it was installed and he noticed that it had the valves that make the choppers chop which was not normal on the press. Im sorry but I forget the name but it's supposed to alleviate the constant pressures on the squeegees but he said apparently they are bypassed somehow because there is constant pressure on the squeegees when it finishes the stroke. Don't know if that may be an issue or not.

Try the oil trick first. Drain the air & put it in the valve, just a drop or two, use the oil you use for the press or 3 in 1, if this helps you might want to increase the amount of oil you're air lines are getting.

If not or keeps coming back.

Is it one of these that you have retro fitted in? If so I have had to replace them on Sportsmen's first & last heads ( the two that tend to get the most use ) from time to time. In fact I just ordered some a few days ago to replace the two on our big press, they are the original ones 5-6 years later & this press runs every day. I usually stock these types of parts for my turn & burn presses that are constantly running. Went to parts toolbox & no parts :(

Also if you're squeegees are staying down filled with air at the end if the stoke it does sound like a bypass or faulty mac-valves. If the relay is still getting power at the end of the stroke this will happen.

May need a whole new Mac Block. Common causes are either water in the air or age or both

I will try the oil and see what happens. Being that im personally in the shop only part time now makes some of these things hard to deal with.

If your machine is older it may have one valve per head that controls the stroke and the chop... If that is the case, a bad cylinder could also cause the problem you are having... Typically the choppers are the culprit. If this is the case, in the idle position the flood will be up, and the squeegee will be down. If you pull the top line from the flood chopper (Currently the exhaust line) there should be no air coming from the chopper port or the line. If there is you probably have a bad cylinder. If the air is coming from the chopper port that is your culprit, if it is coming from the line, clamp off the other exhaust lines until the air stops. It can get tricky if you have more than one bad chopper, if that is suspected clamp off all of the exhaust ports, including the stroke cylinder. If that doesn't expose the problem, it is most likely the valve... Not sure if that makes sense lol... Let me know if I can help  ;D

On my 97 gauntlet Ihave a plug in the bottom of the square tubing. I put a 90 and a pipe with valve so Icould make sure there was no water in my press. I check it once a week.

There is  plug on the bottom of my press, I pulled it when press had no air and did this. To empty water and any extra oil from press or see if I had oil in press for sure.
Hope this Helps.
