Hello,
A very general question, How often do you change needles? and what determines if a needle is dull. Every once in a while we get a frayed thread break. Is this due to the aforementioned dull needle?
Any thoughts?

We change when fraying at eye is obvious, or we see a issue with the sewing. Or if we have an issue that we kinda cant't pinpoint.
Once a year we change them all. Just in case. Pia, 90 needles.

Depends what I'm doing. Sometimes an 80/12 (or whatever) is needed. I have a sheet that I mark down which needle is changed to what.(eg: Needle 9 - 80/12 S) Generally, if you get three thread breaks on the same needle, it needs to be changed.
I also change them with the semi annual all over check up(making sure that there are no hidden problems you don't always see with reg. oiling and maintenance)
One thing you might want to do as well, the colors you use most ( eg:black, white, red, ) change them around all the time. Don't keep them on the same needle all the time. That way all the needles get used roughly the same amount.

Needles need to be changed on a fairly regular basis depending on your sewing style and how often you sew. We recommend using a new needle for each new project you start or when you start sewing a distinctly different material that has special needle needs like leather or something stretchy. Failure to change your needle can result in broken threads, skipped or uneven stitches, or even puckered or damaged fabrics. Most sewing machine manuals come with instructions for replacing the needle.
A fresh, sharp needle will improve your stitches and make your sewing look top notch.
