Title: What have you built???
Post by: Screened Gear on June 23, 2011, 03:35:40 AM
I am just curious what others have built in their shop. I have a hard time paying for something if I can build it. I shopped everywhere for a washout booth. I wanted one with a top so water didn't go everywhere. All the ones under $1000 didn't have tops, small or where just cheap looking. I ended up building mine. I bought the Polypropylene sheets at a local plastic dealer. Then bought and learned how to use a plastic welder from Harbor Freight.  I think I have $170 into it. That’s including the plastic welder and enough plastic welding strips to make 10 to 15 more of them.

Business diversification - evil-bay off wash booths.

If your images are too big to attach, then this may help (http://www.coloryourworld.us/files/UploadAnImage2.pdf). Thank you Diane CYW

You can bypass some of the work with bbc code and use the Image Icon shortcut(the first one) above the smilies.

Pictures floating on the boards somewhere.
I made a squeeze sharpener (maintainer) and an exposure table.
The exposure table uses a single point 1000w light source the size of a cigar.

I've built a washout booth, an exposure unit, and various tables.  My craftsmanship leaves a lot to be desired though.

I have built a few screen printing related items... A 16' long ink table that held something like (10) 5 gal pails of pigment, and 12-14 gal of pigment on an angled shelf above the table. The tops were melamine particle board for easy cleaning, and the scale was on a 24 X 24 melamine rolling base that passed over the 5 gal pails. Does that make sense??? I wish I had a picture. This thing was sweet  ;D

I recently built the screen stretcher we use. The four boxes are mounted on tracks that adjust from an 18 X 18 to a 25 X 36 in about a minute. They also lock down so no pick up when tensions get high. I usually leave 2 adjacent boxes slightly loose to accommodate different frame sizes. Set the frame in and bump the boxes in place. I also added a flow control to the system.... Instead of turning the air on and dialing up the pressure with the pressure knobs, I set the pressure and flick the switch... Much easier  ;)

Not anything to brag about, but it saved countless hours of setup and breakdown on the press when I was running an Anatol back in the day. If you use an older press with manual squeegee / floodbars than you might appreciate what a $1 piece of aluminum channel can do for your shop.  ;)

I just drilled some holes, and screwed them in place. Hangs the clamps right where you need them WITHOUT falling into the screens.

Its really easy to work with Polypro. The plastic welder blows hot air and it melts the plastic. If you can soider you can plastic weld. You can cut poly pro with a normal blade on a miter saw or table saw. Really easy to work with.

My next project is a filter system for my washout booth. anyone build one of those. They want a fortune for a plastic box with a few reverse osmosis filters and a sump pump.

I don't really build much from scratch, although I can and do.  I like to fix up and make existing products better.  I added an awesome filtration system to our parts washer.  I never have to empty the sump anymore.  All I used was an oil filter relocation kit, some clamps and just put inline before the solvent brush and wham, problem solved.  It also takes the huge S373 filter that is for large trucks and buses.  so none of this teeny tiny filter crap.

I also have a drying cabinet, and with that I have a dehumidifier that I run in there that drains out to an HVAC condensation pump and that pumps it up to some condensation lines that I had running overhead from another suite.  It all drains right out back, no more emptying buckets.

I am working on a few other things, if any of them are useful, I will let you guys know.

Don't know if Mike will come by soon to reply, but they are generically called "Toggle Clamps" and you can find them all over the web.  By names of Grizzley, MSI, Rockler, etc.

Harbor freight has them... I have some waiting for a purpose... they were on one of their stupid sales so I picked up a few... I think I had recently got my drill press and thought I might use them on that.

But since this AWESOME topic got dug up... I will be hitting up some of these guys for details!

As far as myself, I'm like MK162, I repurpose things mostly.

I built my washout booth out of a 300gallon liquid tote... it's pretty sweet and works well.  My plumbing is a pretty slick setup (or at least will be once I spend the $10 bucks and do it right.. I don't have a drain in my shop so I pump it out.  I'm setting up my pump with two float switches and a "latching" relay setup that comes on when the top switch is hit but doesn't turn off till the bottom switch is passed.  I'm thinking about adding a flood faucet thing at the top... what do you guys think about that?  It would sheet down a wall of water.  Make final rinse easier as well as washing hands at the end of it all (no sink in shop).

I made some squeegee holders, my routing skills are EXCELLENT (ok, computer router skills that is, wood working leaves a lot to desire)... I have a new squeegee holder idea, thanks to a mistaken purchase that might work out.

Of course my single station press was pretty sweet... even if it was done with bungee cords... that sucker was SOO smooth, amazingly smooth.

My exposure setup is umm... just plain ghetto. :)  But it was nearly free!  (grow light and a vacuum storage bag)

I'll be making a drying cabinet out of a large broken chest freezer soon.

Mooseman, I'm digging ALL of your gear man... got a few questions on it.

screen extenders
http://i184.photobucket.com/albums/x296/copdaddy/shortupDSCF6534.jpg (http://i184.photobucket.com/albums/x296/copdaddy/shortupDSCF6534.jpg)

What is the purpose of the extenders... I had looked at possibly doing something similar to this because I almost stumbled into a Javelin right when I got my 60 mxz's and didn't want to have 60 frames I couldn't use.  But I'd like to understand their purpose on a manual.

So how are these attached to the screen?  It looks like electrical tape but that wouldn't really make sense or does it and I'm not getting it?  I totally want to steal this.  I have a few larger auto screens that mean that I have to move the squeegees all the way to the back clamps to rest the squeegee which is obviously not ideal.

Hey Gilligan, the extenders simply allow the screen to be clamped anywhere along the length allowing us to move the screen out. We use this when we have a series of names to print on shirts we can ger 3 - 4 names in one screen and simply unclamp and reclamp the screen on the extender to move up to the next name. It also works for several left chest designs in same screen allows us to advande to the next line of two or three logos.

We attach them with a piece duct tape or similar vinyl tape, go over the complete length of the holder placing the tape on the tube section extending across the screen & around and under the screen tube on each side, we just tape them down with a firm stretch of the tape.

We actually use a small squeegee and print each pad one at a time or a larger squeegee starting across on two pads and letting up before we drop off the pads. we don't jump the gap. The advantage here is it simply gives us a six pack at one print station leaving others set up as standard.

really this is just a 3rd hand so to speak.....I have attached a couple more pics, unfortunately I never made any drawings when i built it originally.
http://i184.photobucket.com/albums/x296/copdaddy/DSCF1540.jpg (http://i184.photobucket.com/albums/x296/copdaddy/DSCF1540.jpg)
it is actually pretty simply a piece of 3/4 plywood with a 3/4 inch thick set of pads to elevate the top corners of the screen
http://i184.photobucket.com/albums/x296/copdaddy/DSCF1530.jpg (http://i184.photobucket.com/albums/x296/copdaddy/DSCF1530.jpg)
and a similar strip of wood to do same for the bottom square tube keeping the screen elevated to protect the mesh.
The bottom side simply has some reinforcing strips glued to the base to stiffen up the base http://i184.photobucket.com/albums/x296/copdaddy/DSCF1561.jpg (http://i184.photobucket.com/albums/x296/copdaddy/DSCF1561.jpg)

Originally I intended to attach this whole sootin match to the wall with hinges and folding support brackets so I could simply store it against the wall and swing it up when needed but I never got that far.

Also i had clamps on the upper corners but found these were not needed and simply got in the way .
we find this works best on a formica topped counter we have. It can easily be spun around to get to each corner as necessary. the only mod I would make to this based on how we use it is to make it only slightly larger than the actual MZX screen.

hope this helps you can PM if you have any questions.
Respectfully
mooseman

I have buil washout boot from a shower tub, drying cabinet, small screen rack/ink cart, laser trace for embroidery machine. I'm still working on a registration attachement (will post pics when done, but it might be a while).

I did many pics during the whole process while doing the washout booth and here is some of them.

Is that your Miller 180? Those are some sweet machines, Tig or High Freq. at the push of a button and it will run off 110 volt. Nice work on the frame for the light table I have one like it but with a Plate Maker 1K at the bottom of it, my frame is of 1'' tube steal and I used a mig to weld it out still does the job.

That was a Miller Diversion 165.  Awesome little welder for small stuff and welded aluminum VERY well for such a small machine.  I sold it to a car buddy of mine and bought my other car buddy's L-TEC transformer-based tig rig with water cooled torch and bunch more power but not mobile.  I miss the Miller 165 though!  My cheapie MIG is so inconsistent I use the tig whenever I can.

I do want to build shrouds around the whole thing to keep the blinding to a minimum.  The OLEC is shuttered so when you turn it on the shutter closes and the bulb strikes up to high power 5k, then cycles down to 1k I believe until you start an exposure.  Then shutter opens and goes to 5k then closes.  So a lot less blinding that the metal halide with no shutter lol.

I wish I had half the skills you guys have at building things. I also  wish I had half the time you guys must have to build those things.  I can't build things. I'm an artist. I sit and punch keys and adjust curves all day.  LOL.

That's the flip side, most of us wish we could do the artsy stuff that you do! ;)

ain't that the truth.  what really sucks is my brother in law.  He's one of those guys that learns something in 10 minutes and he can teach a class on it.  He's also a super cool guy, so it's really hard to be jealous.  I wish I had a portion of his coolness.

I enjoy building stuff especially the high end stuff. I am currently teaching welding as a part time morning job and on Mon. & Thur. nights teach 3 hrs to adults. I can and do build alot of stuff from the metal side of things more so than wood. If I cut it too short in metal I just weld a piece on it an make it work. Not a whole lot of Amum. welders out there due to the special machine it takes ( High Freq. ). I really like your design on the light table and etc. Glad to see that there is others on the boards that gets into building thier own gadgets and ideas.

Very cool exposure unit--working on the same type of thing myself.
I'm thinking about just skirting the frame with a blockout cloth, but I'm planning on adding ventilation to push air across the glass.

You doing anything for venting, or does the blower on the lamphead take care of it well enough?

Looks like we are about to build (2) 12 X 36 flash units for a customer... I plan on posting pics, so stay tuned!! I wish I could weld... I can work with wood all day (lol) but the 110 Vac welder I have down stairs just kicks my ass... Nothing but bad welds and splatter everywhere... :(

There is a metal shop near my house that I will bring the cut pieces to have them welded... Should be cool!! Have the angle and height adjustments figured out, just got to get approval on the job.

This is something we built to assist in apply our pallet tape.

There's a blower on the lamphead and louvers in there that take care of that so I don't think the shielding would need any vents.

I was just curious, thinking once it's boxed in shooting vertical it would heat up the glass quite a bit, but perhaps just venting near the top would take care of it with convection...

Unfortunately, I have a lot of experience with enclosed units that are far better at heating than exposing...    ::)

Is that bolted to the floor?

As hard as it is to pull pallet tape off the roll, I would think the whole thing would lift up or you'd pull it over.

I bet you move it up to the edge of the table and the stopping force is on the table, not the legs.

Post by: Get Shirts on February 16, 2012, 09:45:16 AM
No, it's not bolted down.  We just stand on the base as we pull the pallet tape off.

Ah, that makes sense now.  Tks.

Just thinking.  What if you bolted a piece from the top to the wall?  Like a superstrong paper towel (tape) dispenser.  I may have to try that myself.

Here is my regi unit, sorry about the sh!tty photo. My phone is a piece of cr@p!!!
It has registration marks on it so I will be taping positives on it and then exposing and returning screens to the press.
No need for transfer sheets and separate board for taping the positives to the screens.
Closest bump is taken off, I had the back ones the same size, but I had issues when lifting the screen. I had to look for something that is as low as possible and to still be able to bump the screen against it.

Really, really close to mine.

I have 2 stops on the back and only 1 on the right side.  Other than that and that I used cut off bolts for the stops, it's almost identical, including the cutout for the clamps.

Do you have to replace the palet when using this?
I thought about doing that, but I ended up finding that piece of metal at my full time job. That piece is 1/8" thick and that allows me to set off-contact at the same time when registering the screen.

Yes, but being single operator, I don't use all the stations most times so it stays.

I make all my own pallets using MDF and two sides of Formica  this was built oversize so the screen can lay flat and not hang off the sides.

Thanks.

I opted to use 3 pins for the screen positioning.  Using the angle brackets, did you have any problems getting them perfectly perpendicular and square so the screens sit in tight.  Have you experienced any screens that wiggle from being not square themselves?

Yep if the screen is not square it throws it off a bit. I just started using this so its nor refined yet but seems to be working, I plan on adding a side stop to one of the platens on the press and it should work out good,    I hope

I'm starting to see a clear disadvantage using side clamps...  :-\

just build a reg system around them.  I prefer side clamps, you should be able to use rods instead of solid sides.

I could just remove the angle and place a bolt with a bushing For my pins should be an easy change good advice

In the last 6 month we have build
-a very nice washout booth with backlights. All made from stainless steel.
-an even better screen drying cabinet

Saved a lot of cash on doing some DIY.

Thanks Tom.  It was real easy to make.  Building that and platens for the press out of MDF and formica only requires a saw, sander, router, contact cement, and my wife's rolling pin (to roll out the air bubbles).

Nice, but way too complicated.  I'll snap a photo of ours in the am, all we did was use a piece of angle aluminum that we wedged into the washout tank.  Works great and was $8 and almost instant to install
