So I head in to work in the office at 6:45 am this morning and start working. A message pops up and says WINDOWS 7 has updates would you like to defer or update now? I click defer. (I'm in the middle of something). It goes away.I'm into a job for 15-20 min. BAM! I see a window that says something like,...SAVE SAVE AS.... and before I figure out whats happening it fades away. Then BAM! another window comes to the forefront. Says same thing and fades away.
Next thing I know, It's restarting the PC.
Window's is quite irritating.
-
you can change the settings. Nothing was worse than coming in the next day to a restarted computer.

One time I was in the middle of a presentation for a new customer when it happened. I almost threw my laptop down the steps :(
-
mac.

I want to throw my Windows 95 CD's at anyone's head, ninja style, who says "mac" or "get a mac". ::)
I've been with Microsoft since DOS 3.0. and Windows 3.0 and love 'em.
Apple does make an awesome game device, I mean phone :P

I think the reality is, Windows is quite usable and has come long ways in the last decade or so. The other side though is, Mac is more stable and user friendly (and yes, I would know. My last business before this, I was an IBM business partner buying truckloads of equipment at a time. My background is in computer engineering.). Even though I had IBM computers on the shelf (that I could take home any time I wanted to) I ran a Mac at home for many, many years.
Dan on the other hand will never be happy with Windows, even when it is better than the Mac!

Just change your updates to manual not automatic.

I might have few laying around. It might be closer for me to fling them at Dennis, he is right across town!
I'll make sure to play the following as they fly at him:

I think it is personal between windows 7 and Dan.
I run 7 and it has been stable as XP and better at that. I have not messed with the updates settings yet and surprisingly they are much less annoying than older windows. Like I said it must be personal lol.
On a side note I know many here love Tiger Direct. My 600 watt power supply crapped out so I ordered a new 750 from Tiger. Keep in mind my PSU needs to be 24 pin with PCI express six pins two min and at least 4 SATA's. They apparently did not have the one in stock I ordered so some knuckle head thought all he had to do was grab a similarly priced unit and send. The one I got was 400, no six pins two satas and only 20 MB pin. What made it so expensive was all these cool neon lights and fiber optic cables yea.
I called them explained never swap a computer part with something else they almost will never be compatible.

Windows 7 is heading towards Mac, I'm surprised that Microsoft don't sue them for copyright infringement.
Macs are now Intel based and heading towards Windows.
In a competitive industry they are both trying to do what the the consumer wants.
Windows 7 is pretty damn good, XP was a joke security-wise, anyone still using XP can stop calling it 'My Computer'.
btw my server's Linux so I out-geek the lot of you ;)

Does anybody remember when Xerox had the first mouse navigated OS? Wow, did Xerox miss a billion dollar idea!
BTW, I used to use GeoWorks, which I think predates Windows by a few years. I even used Visi-Calc which predates Lotus 1-2-3/MS Excel. And I don't consider myself that old.

The days of OS in court are long gone, Mac lost to Windows because of a loophole Mac (as in Apple Computer) left in the original contract to Gates and MS.
MS has always been a behind-the-curve copy of the Mac OS.
Macs are now Intel based and heading towards Windows
What would make you say that, as far as OS Mac has always had the lead and MS copies, it is the running joke in the computer industry - Microsoft’s coping machines. If anything Apple is looking to the new future of the pad, pod, and phone none of that work looks anything like MS.
Features are another story as is file format standards, as strange as it sounds it seems that both “evolve” with the needs of the customer and the industry’s new tools.
In a competitive industry they are both trying to do what the the consumer wants.
Not exactly MS has a long history of attempting to lock customers into inferior formats, squelch new ideas, copy, or buy them along with amoral marketing practices and vaporware. MS has a bad case of "not-invented-here” and use their clout to push that agenda.
Windows 7 is pretty damn good
It may well be, but the days of MS are numbered now, I certainly would not invest any money in the company, coasting on former successes and customer lock-in.
We all wondered about the paperless office in 1989 - it is just around the corner.
-
I think it's all what you are used to. We've had Windows and we've had MAC, and we've had Windows running on a MAC (two different times). We'll stay with windows, thankyou.

Xerox GAVE it away! The story is quite interesting.
Here are two quotes.
The nature of the personal computer is simply not fully understood by companies like Apple (or anyone else for that matter). Apple makes the arrogant assumption of thinking that it knows what you want and need. It, unfortunately, leaves the “why” out of the equation — as in “why would I want this?” The Macintosh uses an experimental pointing device called a “mouse”. There is no evidence that people want to use these things. I don’t want one of these new fangled devices.
- John C. Dvorak In a review of the Macintosh in The San Francisco Examiner (19 February 1984)
If [Apple] is smart it will call the iPhone a "reference design" and pass it to some suckers to build with someone else's marketing budget. Then it can wash its hands of any marketplace failures. It should do that immediately before it's too late.
- John C. Dvorak "Apple should pull the plug on the iPhone" in MarketWatch (28 March 2007)

I do know one thing...
Whenever a client has trouble with using a computer for graphics and printing positives, every time I switch them over to Mac all the problems from before vanish.
I have one client that ran the numbers, switched to Mac systems and is far more of an evangelist than I ever was and he was a die hard “macs suck” PC/Windows guy...

That's not the same Dvorak who has the wildly popular Dvorak keyboard is it?

Dr. August Dvorak tried to help the world get away from QWERTY with a scientifically designed keyboard.
John C. Dvorak is a “Tech journalist” who has hung onto the industry like a leach providing partly cognizant drivel for the now rotting tech publishing industry.

LOL... For those who don't know, Dot's a Mac guy who's apparently slumming so that he can serve his PC-based clients or run some kind of RIP or something.
Wash your hands when returning to work, please, Dan.
So, anyway, yes that's annoying... my wife's new laptop does this same thing. How/where's the button to make it stop?

For PSU's, just go with an Antec, Seasonic or Corsair and you can't really go wrong.
newegg.com or zipzoomfly.com are good places for components.
Tiger Direct is great if you know EXACTLY what you are getting and they have EXACTLY what you need in stock and you never have to return it. Otherwise, nightmare.

Yup. Or even a plain MacBook. Mine is a black one I paid $1400 for almost 3 years ago. I had a G5 that I did all my stuff on prior, but early last year when I got spooked about backing crap up, I put everything on my MacBook so I could take advantage of Carbonite. Ended up giving the G5 to my kid. I plug my Apple CinemaDisplay into the MacBook and do everything on it now. Maxed out the RAM, running CS5, have Windows XP installed for using Ghostscript as needed and my credit card swiper.

27" iMac for $1699.
No need for anything more, upgrade RAM so it is maxed out and you are set.
No need to mess with towers, cables and stuff like that. It comes with wireless keyboard and mice (New track pad is nice).
I hope to get it at the end of the year to replace my old iMac.

on a tangent a little, but the new Mac keyboards are garbage. The clear one was nice, but the new one, with the flat keys, it is so hard to type . . .

We bought a $350 best buy special for our POS machine as the software was intended for xp machines. This one has windows 7 and yes, it's like the most half-assed attempt at copying the mac os you could imagine from my thankfully brief interactions with it. It's incredible how much time you can lose doing very, very basic tasks with jankety products like this. Windows popping up everywhere and hanging up just trying to save and print a pdf file. My co-worker is kinda anti-mac but this machine just drove my point home that "they just work". I don't have time or desire to spend hours cleaning up and tuning up somebody's idea of a sick joke just so I can get back to work. Sometimes I think about how much time and energy the world has lost because of this singular product.
But get this: our wireless printer works fine with the macs but the windows 7 machine won't print to it.
Sign of the apocalypse.

I'm on the fence about a new keyboard for the mac. The one that came with the G5 was really nice, but I gave that away with the G5. I've got an old G3 one that I tried with my MacBook but some of the option/click keys don't work correctly in Illustrator and Photoshop, so I was looking to buy a new one, preferably wireless, maybe bluetooth. The new Mac keyboard is too much (if not identical) to the keys on my MacBook, so I'm not sold on getting one. I like to put my MacBook to the back of my desk so I've got a little more room at the front, and I liked having a simple keyboard for that, but not since I'm not re-keying "War and Peace" anytime soon, I think I'll pass.
I did buy a "magic mouse" and I like it. I've read some reviews of folks that don't.

I like mine too, and I do know how to type. But there are plenty of alternatives too. No mouse for me, Trackball only.

You guys do know that Apple would have completely died in the late 90's if Microsoft had sneezed in the right direction... But to avoid anti-trust lawsuits (I know, that didn't work out too well did it...) they bailed out Apple with a $150 million stock purchase and a basic "we will share all our patents together" type setup...
"In 1997, five years after the lawsuit was decided, all lingering infringement questions against Microsoft regarding the Lisa and Macintosh GUI as well as Apple's "QuickTime piracy" lawsuit against Microsoft were settled in direct negotiations. Apple agreed to make Internet Explorer their default browser, to the detriment of Netscape. Microsoft agreed to continue developing Microsoft Office and other software for the Mac over the next five years. Microsoft also purchased $150 million of non-voting Apple stock, helping Apple in its financial struggles at the time. Both parties entered into a patent cross-licensing agreement."
If you think WIN7 and OSX are getting close now - check out the changes coming in Windows 8...

I do like Macs, but... Fundamentally, before we disappear up Steve Jobs catheter, a MacBook costs about double what you can buy a similar spec'd Win7 laptop. I reckon to use a laptop for 2-3 years before replacing it, an old MacBook will still be working but will be very, very slow.
I also run Ubuntu, which is free, runs on any box and will run faster than Macs or Windows. It is also very secure. If you have any old boxes you can give them another few years of life.
-
My MacBook is 3 years old now and still going good. The only slow to launch things I have are InDesign and Firefox, which was raising hell with everything, so I've switched to Safari as my browser. Bought a "new" white and clear Mac keyboard off eBay to replace the one I gave away. Keys seemed to bind up a little, and it wasn't as pleasant to use as I'd recalled, so I sprung for the aluminum bluetooth one and I'm really pleased with it. The "feel" is like a laptop, but the things don't bind up and I'm surprised that, even with it's relatively diminutive size I can type quite comfortably.
-
I just got a new Mac Pro and it's awesome. I like this little flat keyboard. The old white ones were dust collecting trays. The wireless mouse is great too. Apple's design team is good, but I've NEVER liked their mouses till now. I've always had to go buy a third-party Windows-style mouse. This touch-sensitive scrolling is addictive.
To answer Doug, as an artist who is airbrush-trained, yes, a Wacom pen tablet is essential. I went all-out for the Cintiq 5 years ago and it was the best money I've ever spent. Any digital artist who uses raster programs more than 50% of the time should invest in one, seriously. The only thing I don't like about it is that it's VERY easy to scratch the screen. If your career is digital art-based, then the money thing shouldn't be any more of a problem than buying an automatic press is for a print shop. Mine paid for itself very quickly.
The other thing you shouldn't skimp on is a good, ergonomic chair.
As far as the whole Mac vs Windows thing, it really doesn't matter... whatever gets the job done for you is the best way to go. I just happen to like Apple's OS, and their machines (with the exception of their latest generation of Macbooks) are very easy to upgrade with RAM and extra drives. I, too, am wondering if Apple will survive without Steve Jobs.
If your OS is compatible, try Google Chrome for a web browser. I really like it.
-
Command I agree, they are all tools used to get the job done. The craftsman matters more than the tools he uses.
We were talking about apple stock the other day. I just don't think they are going to continue owning the markets like they have. It's hard to keep that up and be on top, everybody is gunning for you.
-
I just set up my GF's new Imac 27" and all I can say is wow! It is unbelievable absolutely no wires at all except for the power cord. Once I got it running I played around and was surprised how similar it is to windows in functions etc. $1700 is pricey but I just might buy myself an Christmas present this year with my bonus!
One bad thing tho i synced her apple laptop to the new Imac and for some reason we cannot access any of the files, it states that we do not have permission to access them. I am led to believe she made a mistake by naming the Imac the exact same as the Laptop I will find out after I talk to their support.

I bought a medium Intuos 4 tablet through MacMall's eBay store for $319 new with free shipping, primarily to use for photo retouching. I had an old tablet long ago that I never really got much use out of and that hadn't the features of the new ones. Just waitin' for the mailman, now.
