Ok so I work mainly in Illustrator and I am not a font/text fan at all and I've been trying all kinds of things to recreate the "baseball" in the tail, but no matter what things I do it doesn't look the same (so I just redrew it) But I have run into this several times and I would like to know how to do it the right way.......
Yes I know this is a basic entry level question and once someone posts how to do it I'm going to have a "duh" "oh ya I remember that!" moment.....
for some reason the pic is turned sideways and I can't get it to post properly.....sorry..... Probably a Photobucket setting. Should be fixed now, Frog to the rescue, LOL!

In Corel I would use the envelope tool...AI idk!
-
Type on a path and then convert to outlines...then distort or transform but the newer ones have addition tools like perspective and 3d
-
Yep...Envelope in Corel.
-
Illustrator - Mesh Warp is your best bet, there is also another option to make make a warp with a top object.
-
Yep. Thats the word I was looking for. Mesh Warp. Thats a good one.
-
After step 1 and 2 do "Object" - "Expand Appearance" so you get your true paths back.

Now that's simple and concise, nice work...

Thanks for all the great replys! I tried the Mesh warp several time and it just doen't seem to work well for me or maybe I just don't understand how to use it properly. I also tried the "mesh with top object" and that looked worse!
IntegrityShirts I also tried the free distort and couldn't get it quite there...I guess I'll have to try again because you made it look so easy. It could be once again that I don't know the proper way to use the tool.
Oh and thanks for all the "in Corel that is easy" responses! LOL!! ;) I realize that by only using Illustrator I am limiting my self on what I can produce and should really look into adding Corel to my list of programs.

Hold shift while using free transform so you're locked on the vertical path, should help a little. I'd probably squish the text horizontally a little before doing step 1 and 2 to get it closer to the art on the shirt.
Make sure you "expand appearance" in between steps or the program applies the filter to the original paths.

It's also very easy in Illustrator, it might take 45 seconds or so. How easy do you need it to be? Just kiddin', but give it a try...

Lol, I wondered if I was missing something. I can't do squat in Adobe Irritator.
..Corel since 1991.

Old person steps up to the podium.. I am proficient in Illustrator, Freehand and even corel enough to make the tails and shape the type BUT...even though I have gone away from the MAC platform in the last 6-7 years I still have a G4 that has a lot of my old art on it and on It I have a program called TYPESTYLER.. I think something similar is available for corel users from one of the aftermarket accessory companies you don't have to have an art degree you just open it up and have it do it for you... then do your final adjustments and get a good nights sleep

Actually, the most recent version of TypeStyler is available as an app at the Mac App Store. Runs on OS 10.6.8 and up (Snow Leopard).
Steve
I always favored Freehand myself, but as I hired artists who only knew Illustrator, that became my favorite for vectors.

I made this little movie of the baseball design to show how easy it is to manipulate type with the Envelope Tool in Corel Draw: http://www.bluesunwater.com/baseballfinal3.wmv (http://www.bluesunwater.com/baseballfinal3.wmv)

Sorry about my movie yesterday...I didn't realize how large the file was. This one should be OK: http://www.bluesunwater.com/baseballfinal3.wmv (http://www.bluesunwater.com/baseballfinal3.wmv)

;D I thought that you may be apologizing to the OP who works in Illy!
-
Go online, find a copy of Illustrator 10 and KPT vector effects for AI....download and install both....find KPT Warp Frame under Effects....use it...love it....curse the day corel bought KPT and updates in Illy outdated thr best damned plugin Illustrator ever saw.
OR...find an old Mac (pre-OSX), then find TYPESTYLER.
Best old program we'll never see again, as far as text and text manipulation.
-
Thanks for all the great responses guys! I have been looking for true type manipulation software/plug ins with no great results. I will look into some of the suggested programs though and I guess eventually will have to fork over the cash for Corel and add it to my arsenal of design programs.

I got an email from TypeStyler the other day, on sale for $45.00. Great program, loved using it in the old days, meaning the '90's. Strider Software.

You might check Ebay for older versions of Corel. They tend to be pretty cheap and have almost all the same features as the latest version. I can't remember which version introduced the envelope tool, but it was at least as far back as version 9 (I know because I had version 9...)

Advanced Artist has their product called Design Base which has about 40 preset envelopes that are done with a click of the mouse. I like it. They are having a 50% off sale right now. But it is only for Corel.
Oh the good thing is Design Base is FREE! My favorite 4 letter word!!!
