Title: I think it's salvageable.
Post by: mk162 on March 06, 2012, 12:49:52 PM
no, it did not come out of my shop.  My friend left his flash unit on overnight...in the basement of his house.

I know, I have never seen one that bad.  I am surprised it didn't start a fire.

Luckily Action Engineering is in town, so he can get a replacement quick.  Also, Brannon makes them as well.  I also have some of these left over too.  I can't believe the house is standing.

I hate to admit it, but I turned a silicone sheet from an Action Engineering solid AL platen into a possible museum specimen about two weeks ago.

It was clearly the worst one I've ever done, but OVERNIGHT!?!?!?!! NOT EVEN MAYBE.

Your friend has a Guardian Angel, period. Luck doesn't even enter the picture, unless his basement is an empty concrete bunker.

I had flames 4 feet above the water soaked towel I used to smother the inferno which also eventually ignited, and I think my incident was about 15 minutes.

Yes. I'll second the lottery ticket idea.

How do you like your pallets? Burn that bitch to the ground and send it out. ;)

Had it not been for my final walk through last night.. I would have done the same thing.. found the flash was on high rather than off and the outside 1" of paper on the board was brown as the platens were swung out a little.

With my luck, it would have burned the house down.

Wrong way to look at that my friend.  "With your luck" you just caught it before it had the chance!

Never underestimate one last "idiot check".

Nothing much is worse than the smell of buring a tacked shirt board other than curing 50/50's  , it's a smell that makes me gag.

A disconnect for the entire shop was always on my mind when we used IR flashes.

A disconnect is a good thing, but wouldn't have helped me (in case any don't know, I burned down my shop some years back) as I thought that I was just going into the house for a minute since I was in the middle of a job.
One thing lead to another, and ten mintes later, my life changed.
The irony is that the "emergency" for which my wife called me in completely pales in comparison to the emergency I created.

Kids. please learn from our mistakes!

Yikes! Dang Frog, thats serious! I didn't know flashes could start fires, I'm always trying to light my cigarettes on them when I forget a lighter... never works :P

Once I had left my flash on for a weekend! I came back and saw it still plugged in, thank god I swung it from the platen, I could have come back to cinders

We've had a lot fewer problems here with the shuttle flash.  I love it.

I have gone back to my shop so many times to check on what i missed turning off. i live about 3/4 miles away and it is a real PITA to return to quell my mind
Regular routine is heaters off and cool down, walk to the basement turn off the water and in winter turn the heat off.

I hate going back to check what I thought I left on but seeing that picture scares the crap out of me....not sure i will bitch so much about going back to check my stuff. I have plenty of insurance but I sure don't want to test it to see if it is any darn good ::)

Thank God for automatic quartz  flashes

When I was in the "manual phase" and using an IR flash, I had a sign that hung above the inside of  both doors to my shop and it read, "Are You Powered Down?" I can not tell you how many times I left dreary eyed and dead dog ZOMBIE tired.... It was a reminder to turn Sh!t off.

one guy powers everything off and another does a walk through. Usually me. kind of like proof reading, we have two people do it.

I have automatic one which is set to stay in place just enough to print 4 shirts (6/4 manual) or I can move it foot a foot pedal.
Even if I forget it, it will not stay too long above the pallet.
It is a great feature, but I would not want it to stay ON the whole night anyhow.

I had a scare about 6 months ago, scared me into upgrading to a quartz flash.  I love working with the quartz, I am much more relaxed while working with the flash, love the workflow and feel much safer.  Needless to say I also bought a fire extinguisher that now sits right near the press.

fire extinguishers, i try and have one in every work space hanging on the wall or in plain sight.  It's like insurance, you have it, but you don't want to ever need it.

I have a circuit breaker box in the shop, next to the door. When I leave, I never shut the lights off. I shut the main breaker off. That way I know everything in the shop is off!

Of course, this does not help if you are on a bathroom break, or other distraction.

1 under the sink, 2 in the garage, 1 under my drivers seat and 1 in the wifes car.

Never had to use one, but when I do, I have them.

I'm the same way about my water being shut off, I would hate to flood my shop, but fire would be worse that water.

I came in the shop after a 3 day weekend to the sound of my pressure washer humming and a busted water hose and a nice little flood.
